Texans are flocking to Obamacare amid the pandemic - Today is the last chance to sign up

Texans are flocking to Obamacare amid the pandemic, and Tuesday’s the last chance to sign up for 2021 coverage

Elected leaders in Texas have always opposed the Affordable Care Act, consistently rejecting Medicaid expansion and leading the way with the latest lawsuit to challenge the 2010 law.

But the state’s residents are going a different way, signing up for Obamacare for 2021 at a higher pace than ever before.

From November through Dec. 5, the average daily number of Texans enrolling on HealthCare.gov shot up 22% compared with last year. That’s the largest gain of any state on the federal exchange and roughly twice the average increase for all states over the same period, according to the website ACASignups.net.

“The pandemic was not on anybody’s mind when they created the health insurance marketplace, but it was built to rise to this occasion,” said Stacey Pogue, senior policy analyst at Every Texan, an Austin advocacy group formerly known as the Center for Public Policy Priorities. “When you have huge job losses and huge income losses, it’s a real backstop.”

We are grateful to have it, and find the repeal of it to be very short sighted.

It is beyond barbaric that a state refused to expand Medicaid

Family of three with income 80,000, bronze plan three dollars per month. The govt subsidy is 18,500. The new state of California subsidy gets added to the fed subsidy but it is not that great. There will be a California only penalty for not buying health insurance, to replace the old federal penalty. The deadline in CA is a bit later.
