As stunning and disturbing as the basic story is, what's as bad or worse is that @Chicago_Police went to federal court to keep CBS 2 from airing its report.

(19,066 posts)In most of Europe, this would not be tolerated. In more free countries, they'd never dream of giving law enforcement this type of sweeping power where warrants are rubber stamped and overwhelming force is used every time.
Finished college over 20 years ago, lived with several German and Dutch foreign exchange students off campus. To a person, they were absolutely stunned at what American police got away with here. They couldn't believe that the US population allowed police to stop and search them basically whenever they pleased. They were shocked college students' homes were entered whenever the police felt like it because there was loud music or alcohol present.
And as someone who's traveled, your rights mean a lot more in most of our peer countries, that's just a fact. The US has allowed fear of crime to expand the power of police exponentially. America is nowhere near the most free country on earth anymore.
And in this case, racism played a huge factor. Police aren't as careful in minority communities, because they view everyone there as guilty.

(15,943 posts)That the enforcers did not allow you to get dressed while standing around is wrong.
And the fact this is taking over 2 years to investigate all the enforcers is bull-crap. They know who was there, they are just dragging their feet since they don't like the heat.
