WASHINGTON Newly released data confirmed on Tuesday that Modernas coronavirus vaccine is highly protective, setting the stage for its emergency authorization this week by federal regulators and the start of its distribution across the country.
The Food and Drug Administration intends to authorize use of the vaccine on Friday, people familiar with the agencys plans said. The decision would give millions of Americans access to a second coronavirus vaccine beginning as early as Monday.
The review by the F.D.A. confirms Modernas earlier assessment that its vaccine had an efficacy rate of 94.1 percent in a trial of 30,000 people. Side effects, including fever, headache and fatigue, were unpleasant but not dangerous, the agency found.
The success of Modernas vaccine has become all the more crucial to fighting the pandemic as other vaccine efforts have faltered. The hopeful news arrives at a time of record-breaking numbers of coronavirus cases that are overwhelming hospitals and of an ever-increasing death toll, which reached a bleak milestone of 300,000 on Monday.

(10,624 posts)it doesn't have to be kept as cold, which means there would probably be fewer opportunities for CVS or whoever to fuck it up.

But, any proven shot would be acceptable. I'm not in any position to get one before sometime next year, but after we see how these first ones work out, I'm ready.
I feel bad for those Brits who ended up tested pos for HIV antibodies. In the beginning of the epidemic, I recall someone said that the virus acted like HIV did.
So, I have always wondered about that. I don't think these things are related, however.
I hope that the results are transparent.
Sympthsical
(9,074 posts)Pfizer will only last in your typical fridge (2-8C) for 5 days. Moderna will last for up to 30 days in the same conditions.
Because Moderna can be stored at -20C (Pfizer at -70C), it means many facilities don't have to shell out or wait for the logistics of installing new deep freezing units to store and distribute the vaccine.
Where Pfizer is a bit better is that it was tested and recommended for ages 12+. Moderna is tested and approved for 18+.

(9,074 posts)The Johnson and Johnson one is having some problems, as is the Oxford one. Astrazeneca is ok, but it is only 70% effective.
Moderna or Pfizer will do you just as well. A lot of people I've spoken to in the pharmacy trade all seem to want to wait for the Moderna one, because the side effects are considered a bit better. But if you're a high risk, get whichever one you can the soonest.
One thing to note is that Pfizer and Moderna have different timelines for a second dose. Pfizer is 21 days, and Moderna is 28 days.
