I'm 72 y/o and considered high risk due to some underlying medical issues.
How will I know when I'm up for a vaccine shot?
Do I just present myself at some facility that is giving the shots when they say seniors like me are next in line?
OR
Will I be contacted by someone (who?) that I should go to X place and get my shot?
I'm just not sure if it is my responsibility to just go get the shot or if I'm going to be contacted and told as to when and where to go when I'm eligible for the shot?

(9,267 posts)My family doc emails when the flu shots are in every fall, so I hope they remind people that way.

(102,292 posts)as your State Health Department's website. The plans should be updated there. In CO, we get nearly daily emails from the Governor on the status of COVID-19 (and wildfires), with links for more info.

(2,195 posts)That the decisions will be up to our Drs. and expect they will notify us when it is our turn. No one will give anyone a vaccination without proof showing we qualify and just being a certain age probably won't be enough I would guess.

(9,074 posts)Just asked him. His response:
If they have an account with the hospital system, they will receive an email with the date. If not, they may receive a letter in the mail. You can contact your GP and ask.
Keep in mind, a 71 year-old with underlying conditions is second in line. (First in line being first responders and things).
Hope that helps.

(4,999 posts)If you need to contact them to get on the list, they'll put you on it -- the sooner you make contact, the higher you appear on the list. If it's too soon, they should have information about how to get on the list (or just get the shot) as the vaccine supply increases in the near future.

(16,646 posts)Your doctor, or each doctor if you have more than one. Talk to your pharmacist. I've already spoken to mine and they gave us an estimate. I'll check again early next year. Each state will be a bit different, and even within that, each county may be a little different. Finally, the various vaccination sites have a particularly interesting set of instructions. These doses only last so long outside of the super cold storage. So after about 5 days, they are instructed to make sure the doses are given to somebody, which is to say anybody. Pay attention to where these vaccinations are occurring and see if they have a "to be called" list for expiring doses.

(23,350 posts)I'll also talk with one of my favorite pharmacists, see if she can get me a two-pack of Moderna.
I'm almost feeling optimistic.
Still, a bit suspicious that I'll get bumped by some (in my opinion) more worthy groups. As a retired senior, I'm thinking we are useless party animals, no longer contributing to the economic engine. But, I'll take it when offered.

(16,646 posts)By all rights, I should be one of the last. Less than 70, retired, just live with the spouse...
But the reality is that once the higher priority people get vaccinated, it may come down more to where you live and who you know. It will again expose the short comings of the US healthcare system.

(23,350 posts)... even if those inept bumblers are younger, stronger, healthier than most, they will be among the first, or maybe have already received shots.

Fortunately, the more complicated shots (two doses, low temps) are being given to medical people and people in nursing homes, etc., where it's easier to monitor what's going on.

(146,317 posts)regarding who is eligible when, along with where the vaccinations will occur. At that time, I will contact the vaccination site and make an appointment. You should see such announcements on your local TV news and in your local newspaper.
Right not, this hasn't been decided in most states, and it is unknown how many doses of vaccine will be available when.
I think it is too early to try making an appointment.

(34,661 posts)the Shots will be given by Priority. First round are all Front Line Workers,Docs,Nurses,EMT's,Cops,Firefighters and Trump mandated essential workers as well as Nursing Homes. Next will be High risk health persons and Seniors. Then General Population.
We will have regular Schedule updates as per which group you may be in. Best guess for the Fossil Class will be the middle of January depending on availability.
