https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/12/15/mcconnell-sets-up-clash-with-trump-over-whos-charge-gop/If Trump is still going after Kemp for not doing his bidding, why would McConnell be spared Trumps wrath? And if he really wants to press the issue, Trump can give McConnell major headaches in Georgias decisive Senate races. There, party leaders are concerned about GOP turnout dropping thanks to Trumps voter fraud claims and for apparently good reason. McConnells recognition of Bidens win could be read as an attempt to move beyond this phase and focus more intently on Georgia.
But Trump hasnt always been a team player there. He has offered mixed signals, for instance, when it comes to whether GOP voters should entertain boycotting the runoffs if Kemp and others dont do his bidding. If Trump views McConnells statement as the kind of rebuke that it clearly is, he can keep going down that road and essentially hold the GOP hostage. And its been clear for five years that Trump cares far less for the future of the party than he does about himself.
In the end, McConnell was truly in an impossible position. He appears to have chosen the less-bad route, which is to acknowledge reality rather than let this drag on and on while his status as majority leader is uncertain, and hope this all blows over sooner than later.
But if Trump truly believes in his cause rather than if this is, say, just an exercise aimed at fundraising and claiming he never actually lost how can he let this one lie? He cant.
Final paragraph states that the ball is in frump's court. He can either keep quiet and let mcturtle's betrayal stand, making turtle the gop kingman, or, he can sick his GA sheeple on the gop and tell them to stay home, giving U.S. senate control to the dems.
Anyone here think klansman will just roll over? I sure hope mcturtle is crapping his bed right now.

(10,024 posts)If the GOP wins, it will be because of Trump. If the GOP loses it will be because of Kemp and they would have won if Trump put his heart in it.
Trump wants to be seen as a powerful kingmaker not to be crossed.

(6,022 posts)it will be the Repub Party which goes after him. I don't see any reason why McTurtle, et al, would want to have him around to declare war on the Republican party he now feels didn't support him enough, and those running for President in 2024 don't want him around either.
We shall see...

(957 posts)They will leave the GOP. Trump will feign interest, but will only actually be interested if the money keeps coming in. And once he loses interest it will fall apart. Maybe by August.
