“President-elect Joe Biden will pick former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to run the Energy Department, the agency that would play a key role in helping develop the technologies needed to fulfill his pledge to move the country off fossil fuels,” Politico reports.

“Granholm, who served two terms as Michigan’s governor, is experienced in dealing with the auto industry — a potentially big advantage as the new president seeks to speed the rollout of electric vehicles and the network of charging stations needed to power them.”

not for the normal reasons of having someone in the Energy business directly as most Cabinet and near-cabinet picks tends to be "experts" in their fields. As pointed out in the OP, she has direct experience with the industry most needed to be on your team as the fossil fuel transition accelerates as Governor of Michigan for 8 years.

With the picks that Biden/Harris are making, it's vital to have people ready to go on Day One, even if they don't have specific industry experience. Here is where the #2 & #3 positions that do have the experience are also available to carry out the agenda that is laid before them. We may not know who most of the government equivalent of the C-Suite are, but the transition team does, and they will be in place. It is fact that there's no time to waste.

Also the future leadership foundations are laid and we have many positive choices on our side to make it all work out. Or at least that's my hope!

She was born in British Columbia although her family moved to the US when she was just 4. I'm assuming she did apply for and receive US citizenship.
