(16,871 posts)What I can't decide is are we being trolled by sci-fi fanboys or are they just that clueless? Based off of the fact that the my stole their emblem from Star Trek, I'm beginning to think it's the former.

(16,871 posts)Groot is the last of his/her/it's kind...when he (SPOILERS FOR NONE COMIC BOOK TYPES) sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, the Groot we know is dead...what Rocket finds is essentially a cutting of the Groot we love and he plants the cutting which results in "Baby Groot". All that to say, Groot is a creature of asexual typing and we only consider him a "he" because of his voice and character traits both in the comics and movies.
This is a huge topic of discussion amongst comic aficionados and not an easy question to answer, lol. The simplest answer is Groot is a tree...lol
Edit to add: Groot is a far from Trump in his actions as could be

I like your simple answer, but I also tend to call it a he for the same reasons.
If they're a tree, than I would think that they'd technically be a hermaphrodite.
I can just imagine the comic book discussion. That always reminds me of that episode in the Big Bang Theory where the women are arguing about Thor and his hammer.
Classic shit, no doubt.
Thank you for your amazing input, and I also agree with your ETA.
GROOT for PRESIDENT!!

(1,604 posts)We've been moving towards an operational space force for some time now, especially given the presence of military satellites and occasional classified projects that are sent to the ISS. Trump proposed it primarily because 1) he saw it as a potential source for kickbacks, 2) he wanted to appeal to the Heinlein libertarian crowd, and 3) It would be in concordance with the Republican plan for militarizing space, and 4) and most importantly, it would lead directly to the Trump Lunar Base and Resort, making it the first hotel on the Moon. In other words, it hit all of Trump's magic buttons.
All that being said, while the timing is not perfect, a space command does make a certain degree of sense. We're reaching a stage where commercial interests are now regularly manning rockets into low earth orbit (LEO) including to the International Space Station. The Chinese, Indians, Japanese, Russians and Germans have all explored the idea of setting up separate facilities, either building onto the ISS or independently. There are several satellite killers believed to be in orbit, and it's not unlikely that by 2030, the militarization of space will be in full swing.
Biden would actually be well advised to work with the military on what best to do with the boondoggle - there may still be some repurposing that can be done to make it more useful, and historically, it's difficult to shut down a new agency once created.

(61,697 posts)I think it was devised decades earlier, as a division of the Air Force. It was formally removed from AF in 2019.
JHB
(37,161 posts)Separating it had been under consideration since about 2000, since for the USAF it was a secondary mission and it was getting the short shrift (much the way development of slow, relatively cheap close air support planes like the A-10 always takes a back seat to gold-plated fighters).
So it's something that was going to happen anyway, the question was merely the timing. And there's a good case to be made that it's better to do something before you need to, because you can always discover that when you need to, it's actually something that you needed to do earlier.
However, Trump, being the self-promoting shitshow that he is, ensured its rollout would be a laughingstock.
