Don Bacon stands by leaked comment: Trump threw House GOP under bus

Republican Don Bacon might not have said it the same way if he knew that his words would be leaked, but he stands by saying that President Trump threw House Republicans under the bus with his rejection of the coronavirus aid and government spending bill.



“This was a members-only and off the record conference call, but I stand by what I said," Bacon, a Nebraska congressman, said in a statement on Wednesday night.

Congressional Republicans on Wednesday held a call to discuss next steps after Trump suggested that he might not sign the coronavirus relief and massive government spending bill passed on Monday, calling it a " disgrace." Trump asked the $600 direct payment to be increased to $2,000 and criticized other parts of the spending bill, such as aid to foreign countries and funds for the Kennedy Center.

Parts of the Republican call were leaked to members of the press and posted on Twitter as it was happening. Bacon reportedly said that Trump threw Republicans under the bus; House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said that the bill had been "tainted"; and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reportedly said that Trump is still deciding whether to veto the bill. McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, ended the call after realizing that it was being leaked.
