(13,431 posts)He had his first shot a little over two weeks ago and he receives his second one in the middle of January.
He said the trial group is two-thirds vaccine and one-third placebo. He obviously doesn't know which group he is in but he seems to think he is in the vaccine group as his arm was sore for a day or two after the shot and he said his arm is never sore after a flu shot. Otherwise he has had no side effects. He's in his mid-40s and is very diligent about wearing a mask in public.

(1,351 posts)I read they already geared up their supply chain worldwide so that they can start immediate distribution. They plan to have 400 million doses for the US by early 2021 if approved.
The Johnson and Johnson COVID vaccine uses an approach that is very similar to AstraZenecas, so hopefully it will be just as effective. Unfortunately the J&J vaccine is lagging in approval as its still in Phase 3.
If we could get all 3 vaccines going ASAP (Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca), maybe theres hope well turn the corner soon???

(4,569 posts)And, as I understand it, we have capability to manufacture that type of vaccine here in Canada (lagging behind here because a previous Conservative government curtailed vaccine R&D).
This year is ending a lot better than it started!

(1,351 posts)The first efficacy readout of AstraZenecas vaccine could come in the second half of January, Slaoui estimated, and the company could potentially file for emergency use later in February.

(39,328 posts)I might be more worried about the difference between vaccine types - the messenger MRNA vs the Adenovirus and what that means - right now not sure

(44,974 posts)They got 60% effectiveness with 2 doses when they used 2 full doses. They got 90% effectiveness when they used two doses with first dose being a half dose (but that was done on a small group of people).

(4,569 posts)get that half-dose given by mistake issue sorted out (some of the phase 3 participants got only a 1/2 dose in error for the first shot and were paradoxically found to get better protection that those who received the correct, full dose)?
