A 62 percent majority of Americans said they blame congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump for failing to hash out an agreement for $2,000 stimulus relief checks.
National polling data from Data for Progress, a progressive think tank, released Friday from among 1,166 likely voters found that 47 percent blame Republicans in Congress and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell specificallywhile just 15 percent blame Trump for not supporting the $600 to $2,000 direct payment increase earlier.
About one-third of Americans surveyed (32 percent) said they blame congressional Democrats and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for failing to push the $2,000 check legislation through both chambers.
The same polling center released data that found 81 percent of likely voters prefer $2,000 checks over $600, with just more than half hoping for a Democratic-controlled Senate following the January 5 Georgia runoff election.

(3,418 posts)I don't like to write this, but Mitch is right.
Borrowing money in order to give well-off employed Americans a bonus checks when they are not impacted by the pandemic is not wise policy.
I would rather focus the stimulus on those who have seen significant income reductions based on 2020 earnings. Make the payments $500 per month for the balance of 2020, and re-evaluate at the end of the year. By limiting payments to those who are impacted, the checks can be larger.
Send checks to those in need, and "true-up" overpayment with 2020 and 2021 income tax filings.

And those of us doing ok but not hurting will spend the money which this economy needs.

(3,418 posts)That is 250% of median household income.
Studies show that higher-income earners put the last stimulus in the bank. Lower income recipients DID spend on necessities which provided economic stimulus.
I don't advocate killing the stimulus. I want it more effective and progressive.

(6,562 posts)This is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Our economy is dying right in front of our eyes. It makes little to no difference if someone gets extra while a poor person gets a scrap. So what.
We are ALL impacted. We are losing Mom and Pop businesses, those small barely making it businesses, and jobs to go along with them.
Mitch didn't do this to us because he's concerned with who's getting it. HE DIDN'T WANT ANYONE TO GET ANYTHING. (Well, he's probably not worried about his next meal. After, Kentucky just reelected him for another six years!) This is about power and control. Keeping the population desperate is a technique to keep us grateful for *anything* we get. Don't think for one minute that this asshole has the economy's best interests at heart. He has only the coffers of the RNC in mind.
They could have given us $5,000+ and not broken the bank simply by shifting the money around. Give the citizens foreign aid for a year! But, we are being punished for not reelecting Trump!
