"A man with his face painted in the colors of the U.S. flag poses for a picture"

That's the caption for the picture that the Washington Post's email "Today's World View" leads with. You might expect someone looking like a sports fan in national colours. But no, it's the fucking horn guy:

He's wearing furs over his head, he's bare-chested, he's stuck horns on the furs, he's carrying a fucking spear to which he's attached an American flag, and he's got tattoos, permanent or not, of something like the Borromean/Ballantine rings, but with triangles, and what appears to be a globe screaming "AAAAAAAAA".

But sure, he's also slapped a bit of red, white and blue on his face, with a couple of white dots in the blue area, so why use as the description "face painted in the colors of the U.S. flag"? I mean, that's what's really notable, isn't it?

I hope to god this was meant as a joke by whoever wrote the caption.

Ah: there is a term for the triangles: Valknut (spelling may vary). And wouldn't you know it:

The Valknot or "knot of the slain" is an old Norse symbol that often represented the afterlife in carvings and designs. It is often considered a symbol of the Norse god Odin. Some white supremacists, particularly racist Odinists, have appropriated the Valknot to use as a racist symbol. Often they use it as a sign that they are willing to give their life to Odin, generally in battle.

Nonracist pagans may also use this symbol, so one should carefully examine it in context rather than assume that a particular use of the symbol is racist.

Three Intersecting Triangles (right jaw) –– This symbol is known as a valknut or volknut. Among non-racist pagans, it's a sign of the afterlife and a binding of the soul to Odin, chief among the Norse gods. Among racist pagans, it signifies “that one is ready to be taken into the ranks of Odin’s chosen warriors.”

My neighborhood has a flag fetish, but I haven’t seen anyone with a flagpole like that.

They have apparently escalated from tiki-torches.

...This guy is AN ACTOR. He's trying to establish a Q-Anon personae in the reich-wing world from which he can profit.

"The man, known as Jake Angeli or Jacob Chansley, is from Phoenix. 12 News spoke with him over the phone Thursday morning when he stated he was the horned protester at the Capitol.

"12 News has documented Angeli at numerous rallies, marches and events throughout the past year, ranging from Trump rallies to BLM marches. At these events, he claims to be part of QAnon and is usually shouting about conspiracy theories, with a sign that says "Q Sent Me."

"The Glendale Union High School District confirms a Jacob Chansley is a graduate of Moon Valley High School. A yearbook shows he was in the Class of 2006.

This guy looks like too much of a wimp to get real tattoos, especially ones that big, on his rib cage. On this I am an authority: I have two tattoos over my ribs in front and one in the back. I am normally highly insensitive to pain below my face (acute appendicitis felt like a little soreness) and I guarantee you that ink hurt like hell.
