Welfare Mothers

I listen to a local talk radio show in the morning. Today, a number of local wingnuts called with the usual atttacks on "women having a bunch of kids they can't support, just so they can collect welfare" and how said mothers are "stealing our hard earned tax dollars". The calls seemed to be coordinated to follow the appearance of a republican canidate running against Bob Casey Jr., D-PA senator. I recognize most of the callers on this local show, and these I had never heard before.
The wingnuts seem to think this message has broad appeal to voters. Pointing out that welfare mothers didn't get us into two wars on a credit card and crash the economy, didn't give hundreds of billions in corporate welfare in the form of "bailouts", didn't give themselves obscene bonuses and laugh in the taxpayers faces after running their companies into the ground and plunging us into endless recession... somehow these facts fail to penetrate.
It is so much easier to attack those who have nothing than the 1% who have private security armies and own mayors and police forces, who own and control the media to the pointwhere it is now 24/7 news for us to hear about every time Newt Gingrich takes a dump, or Rick Santorum scratches his nuts...
I know others here have run into this tactic of claiming poor people living on near nothing are the cause of all Americas ills. Be interested to hear how you refuted this nonsense, in a way that ordinary people would understand.

I worked with the dept of welfare and never met a mother [black or white] [or father for that matter] who would not have preferred a job [almost any job] to receiving a handout form the dept. So shut the f up you heartless wingnuts.

in a woman's uterus and want to teach abstinence only education. When I applied for food stamps and medicaid they said that even if I didn't qualify they would provide me with birth control. I live in NYS... WNY.

They act like the poor are living it up. I don't understand that. I hear how people are lying to get welfare. I know someone who is doing that, they'll say. Well, then turn them in if they are committing fraud!! Infuriating.

...are right on the money. I am in Erie Pa., and the "lifers" and the extreme right here are hand in hand. Don't even think about suggesting birth control to these loonies with their pretzel logic.

Yeah, it's always the "mother's fault" in the minds of the freepers!

I realize your OP is much broader than my statement here, and I certainly concur with the sentiments you express in the OP. But it's always interesting to me how the Republicans phrase things. They hate women, especially strong women. They will use any and all opportunities to try to blame women for everything. Eve did, after all, tempt Adam!!! LOL

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]...for breeding so indiscriminately, it is government's duty to deny access to birth control for all women!

Right-wing authoritarian logic at its finest.

Namely that the federal government spends less than one percent(about eight tenths of one percent to be exact) of the federal budget on welfare.

Now then, let's look at the military, whose spending eats up approximately 52% of the federal budget.

And out carrying a "Recall Walker" petition in Wisconsin, a "Kill SB5" petition in Ohio.

Fight back at your local Democratic Headquarters, vetting candidates before they become "ours" and supporting them after they do.

Fight back by registering voters and getting them to the polls.

And fight back by voting.
