(9,535 posts)They need to put all posts out of the White House on monitoring - make them require permission of a moderator to post until Biden takes over. But don't stop the many valuable uses of it.
In our region twitter alerts are also used to inform people of new COVID-19 rules, flash floods, earthquakes, planned power outages, shutdowns of major highways due to serious accidents, and many other things that can help save lives.

(16,937 posts)What's wrong with greenhouse gasses? If there's something wrong with them, why are we weakening EPA standards?
And if China is beating us by making more - WTF!!!! What ever happened to USA #1?

(10,918 posts)at least for GHG emissions per person. More than twice as much per person. I can't speak to the other emissions.
Also, realize that they emit to produce what we in the West consume. They get stuck with the blame for the emissions that go into making the products we consume.
More at post 58 below, including the concept of consumption emissions https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=14870993

(23,510 posts)The US had its industrial revolution. Also, China is taking good steps to build green energy infrastructure. And as you said, population is also a factor.
progree
(10,918 posts)this is twice more than China the worlds second largest national contributor;
Expressed on a per-capita basis, the U.S. cumulatively has emitted 8.7 times the CO2 per person than China has.
And if we further corrected for consumption emissions, who knows how big the disparity would be.
But Mosby is correct in indicating that developing countries have to do more to slow, then cut emissions, if we are to keep catastrophic heating from happening (much more catastrophic than what we already have at +1.0 deg C, and plenty of research says much more than +2.0 degrees C is already baked in). (And as unfair as that is)

(65,176 posts)...these facts are actually true.
What isn't mentioned is, China knows which is why they're massively invested in wind, solar & new nuke generation.
The numbers are true, but it's also true they're trying to fix it.

(10,918 posts)their consumption emissions are even less so.
They manufacturer many of the products we in the West buy, and emit GHG in doing so, and get blamed for doing so. While we in the West buy and consume what they manufacture, and so look good on the classical blame-the-producer-not-the-consumer classically fucked up way of classical GHG accounting (they emit to produce what we buy and consume, and they get blamed for the emissions).
I saw a Nation article about the U.K. and how it was reducing its carbon emissions, oh, how wonderfully wonderful, rah rah cheers. Turns out the picture looks a lot different when considering that over time, more and more of what had been manufactured in the U.K. is been done overseas, and the U.K. gets credit for reducing their emissions, while the Asian manufacturing countries get blamed for their emissions that result from producing the goods that the U.K. and other western countries buy.
It looks a lot different when looked at from the viewpoint of consumption emissions . That is, assigning the emissions resulting from the production and manufacturing of goods to the country that is consuming them.
Well this is for 2018. CO2 emissions per person:
https://ourworldindata.org/per-capita-co2
U.S. 16.56 tonnes
China: 7.05 tonnes
and the above is where the producers, not the consumers are stuck with the emissions in the classical blame-the-producer-not-the-consumer classically fucked up way of classical GHG accounting. It would be a huger disparity if it were consumption emissions being compared.
Mosby
(16,358 posts)I could counter with another metric like percapita emissions/percapita gdp, which would show that we produce vastly more goods and services with our emissions vs China et al.
Consumption emissions sounds a bit like the notion of victim blaming. Instead of requiring China et al to install air scrubbers in their factories, let's tell little Johnny he can't have that lego set because he's killing the planet.
Im not sure why this need to be said, but international companies moved production to third world countries in order to enrich themselves further because of the lack of relevant regulations. The consumer DID NOT DO THAT.
Regardless, the planet, oceans, forests and critters don't care about a talmudic analysis of how to properly assign responsibility for pollution, this is one of those times where the simplest approach will be the most efficacious, it's long past time for developing countries to take responsibility for their pollution, and not blame consumers, population differences or whatever else.

(10,918 posts)The problem is that we consume too many products and its not sustainable. That we have a higher GDP does not absolve us in the slightest, nor does it absolve us in the least. Precisely the exact opposite, we are pigs.
We don't produce many manufactured goods anymore, but I'm always looking for good statistics, not ones declared "true" that have been scraped off the Trumpist State Department website.
Services (and we are a service economy by a large margin as far as what we produce inside the U.S.), are less emissions-producing than manufacturing. But we sure don't mind importing the manufactured goods that we gobble up in great quantities. But maybe that's "Talmudic" I guess.
I don't know of any scrubbers for removing greenhouse gas emissions.
Bull shit. The consumers buy the Chinese made goods because they cost less. Yes, I know it's "progressive" to blame something or someone other than ourselves. No, its not progressive, its bullshit.
I also look outside and see the SUVs and pickup trucks that far outnumber plain old cars, and that's not something corporations are doing to us.
We live out in the weeds and drive our monster super pickup trucks and SUVs alone an hour each way to work so we can have bigger houses -- where the air conditioning comes on when it's half a degree above perfect, or we feel like we're living in hell.
And we must have our pets to validate us -- A medium size dog has about as much GHG impact as an SUV driven 12,000 miles per year (mostly from producing the meat it eats). But no. Squeeeee! We need animals bred to adore us to validate us.
Oh we must have those fancy planet-killing intercontinental vacations and cruises too, so we can bore everyone we know with the pictures.
and then we wag our moralistic fingers at "those people" who don't have those things.
Its also time we look at the biggest pigs on the planet, and that is us and take some responsibility. Talmudic? LOL. Red herring? LOL.
