Freshman GOP Rep. Meijer writes at least one of his fellow freshmen voted to overturn the election results out of fear for his family members despite knowing it was wrong. https://detroitnews.com/story/opinion/2021/01/09/opinion-after-heinous-assault-time-reckon-reality/6599593002/

(5,073 posts)Many people are afraid every day. They don't all give into their fears. And this guy has all the resources of government to protect his family, unlike his constituents.

(2,626 posts)Did he consider removing his family to a safe place and then choose to stand on the House Floor and announce to the world that GOP members were being coerced into overturning the election via threats to their families?
Does he realize that the threat to the lives of his family wouldn't go away simply because he complied this time? Did he stop to think that now that he was a mark, any time his vote was required, no matter how wrong or amoral, he would vote yes because his family would be forever vulnerable. That's how the mob works. That's what this administration is.
The playground bully will never demand your lunch money only this one time.

(44,974 posts)Why was he in particular so afraid when the vast majority was not?

(12,904 posts)If so, he needs to inform the FBI. His family, and that of his constituents, would be safer.
Do your duty, Congress!

He should not have taken the oath if he could not do his duty.

(26,142 posts)I am betting he might vote for impeachment -- he doesn't sound happy. I think he's part of the Meijer retail family.
I wonder who the other Freshman Rep was.

(9,670 posts)He ran for office as a Republican. The Republican Party is the Party of Trump. They are one and the same.
This is one of the reasons that Trump's funk was allowed to fester for so long. Fear. Fear of reprisal. Fear of blackmail. Fear of party backlash. Fear of falling out of a window.
Let the GOP self-immolate. I want to be a State's witness. My lawn chair will be set up with adequate social distance and I will wear a proper mask. Burn it down. They pivoted to overt fascism and that will be listed as their Cause of Death.

What we need in Congress are people with the courage to do the RIGHT thing. If you do the WRONG thing and tweet that you wished you could have done better, then you don't belong in the U.S. Congress.
