Just had a reassuring thought about pardons.

Last edited Mon Jan 18, 2021, 11:48 AM - Edit history (1)

I've been worrying and worrying that Trump would blanket pardon all the Capitol invaders. But then I realized that would make the chances of his getting a conviction in the senate shoot way up. Those sheltering in place senators surely don't have kind feelings for that mob. If anyone is still talking to Trump (Ivanka? Jared? I doubt that Melania is..), surely they'll explain this to him?

To all those who say he wouldn't pardon them because there's nothing in it for him. What's in it for him is the continued loyalty of those who side with the mob. Those who would have been there if they could. In other words, the Trump base!

1. Ah, but he will pardon the jerkholes and his family too. AND himself.

MY HOPE is that in so doing, he gives more articles of impeachment and THAT Congress or BIDEN can reverse those pardons due to them being given by someone who was not of a sound mind at the time and/or the Quid Pro Quo of being PAID to pardon and pardoning insurrectionists is a misuse of that power.

3. But also the insurrectionists did him no favors, looked low class, and have nothing to give him back

I would bet he has been advised that it would be better for him to let them be scapegoats and to blame them claiming that they were responsible, not him.

6. I agree. Trump cares as much about the rioters as a cat cares about a turd it just deposited in

a litter box. Or better yet, a turd a cat deposited OUTSIDE its litter box, the responsibility for which it will deny to the end: "What? That? I didn't do that!"

12. Trump base's "movement" became literally a bowel movement as they defecated inside Capitol

They urinated all over too so their insurrection of Capitol has forever stained the Trump brand.

That SOB is going to pardon everybody who ever wore a MAGA hat or knew someone that did. As Americans we will all cringe and be outraged and wonder why American justice is so effing unjust. We will seethe and scream and it will tear at our very souls. Time will pass and it will seem less topical, less relevant, less refutable.

My only remaining hope is that the head of the snake will find true justice in the state courts, and that the penalties are so severe that the pain subsides a little bit. Knowing what I know about our criminal justice system, though, I'm not even sure that will ever happen. We are a nation that postures as fair and equitable, but we're anything but.

5. Nothing in it for him

He wouldn't dream of pardoning them, not going to happen, nothing in it for him. He won't lose a single supporter by not pardoning them and would lose some by pardoning them.

8. Trump will not do anything that doesn't benefit him in some way.

Pardoning the MAGAt mob will not benefit him but would probably hurt him, because doing so would tie him more closely to his encouragement of the insurrection - which, of course, is the specific reason he's been impeached again. Conviction is likely to result in his being barred from holding office in the future even though removal from office would be moot. He does not want another LOSER brand on his fat orange ass, and he does not want to be barred from running again in 202, or at least claiming he will in order to keep grifting off his base. It's possible that he might lose some support among the loonier members of the base if he fails to pardon the mob, but preserving his ego is paramount. If he thinks pardoning the mob would harm his impeachment case (and I have no doubt he's been advised to that effect) he won't do it.

9. Here's my reassuring thought. All the past pardons were pretty much quid pro quo.

T***** pardoned people after he received financial gain or an ego boo. He won't pardon anyone who can't pay the going rate or would give him an edge in his inevitable trials. It's all about him, and both his staff and the insurrectionists failed, so screw them.

10. He would lose a lot if he is convicted in the Senate.

He will do everything he can possibly do to keep that from happening.

Pardoning the mob would not help him in the Senate trial.

Just as you say, it could turn enough against him to convict.

I don't think he'll try it for that reason. Plus, he sneers at these people, thinks they're low-class and make him look bad. And they failed at what they were sent in to do. He prefers people who don't screw things up and get in the way.

And, as I've said, even if he tried it, I don't think they would hold up since I believe the courts would find that absolving huge swaths of people for unnamed and unidentified crimes isn't really a "pardon" and, thus, not within his constitutional power.
