On this date in 1793, King Louis the XVI....

...and Marie Antoinette were executed by guillotine for treason.

Those were the days, I'm tellin' ya.

Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed for treason. Louis had failed to address France's financial problems, instigating the French Revolution that eventually descended upon him. He made matters worse by often escaping to more pleasurable activities like hunting and locksmithing. Modern historians attribute this behavior to a clinical depression that left him prone to paralyzing indecisiveness.

Louie the XVI was the king of France, in 1789.
He was worse than Louie the Fifteenth
He was worse than Louie the Fourteenth
He was worse than Louie the Thirteenth
He was the worst, since Louie the First.

He kept hoping the loyal monarchists were going to stage another revolution, tear up the new French Constitution, and reinstate him as the King of France. That never happened and he was found guilty of treason.

The French Terror which included sham trials and real beheadings for some while others were deported to
French Canada. Studying history can be very illuminating!
