At around 3 p.m. Thursday, Capitol Police asked the National Guard to relocate the soldiers who were using Capitol hallways and open space to rest during their shifts, National Guard Bureau spokesman Major Matt Murphy told CBS News.
"As Congress is in session and increased foot traffic and business is being conducted, Capitol Police asked the troops to move their rest area," Murphy said. "They were temporarily relocated to the Thurgood Marshall Judicial Center garage with heat and restroom facilities."

Some guardsmen expressed displeasure at having their rest area moved to a parking garage. While the garage has heat and lights, there are only a few restrooms and limited cell phone and internet service and power outlets.

Duckworth called it "unreal," adding she couldn't "believe that the same brave service members we've been asking to protect our Capitol and our Constitution these last two weeks would be unceremoniously ordered to vacate the building. I am demanding answers ASAP. They can use my office."

The U.S. Capitol Police confirmed today that it would investigate the matter and that the troops are back in the Capitol.

(8,329 posts)But the House and Senate were not in session leading up to the Swearing in and the Capitol was restricted with very few people coming and going. The guardsmen were there to protect the building and the people in it and they were great to have there. Now the building is open back up for business, there are many more people back in the building and there is an enormous amount of firepower in the building.
Although the Capitol building looked like a war zone 2 weeks ago, currently (in large part due to the presence of the guardsmen and women) it is not. In a war zone people would not be allowed to walk around unsecured weapons, there would be a secure perimeter established. This is not able to happen in a building that has people roaming through it.
For everyone worried about members of Congress bringing their guns to work (I agree with you and am worried about that) I share with you that any one of those nuts could grab one of the weapons that are there and have a much more highly efficient weapon than the one in their holster or pocketbook.
