(2,564 posts)West Nile virus is the most common and serious vector-borne disease in California. There have been more than 7,000 human cases and over 300 deaths reported in California since 2003. The mosquitoes that spread WNV are found throughout the state.

(65,057 posts)He & his brother owned the family business while both working as school teachers & band directors.
The younger brother died at around 55 of west Nile.
His brother told me he was healthy, felt crummy for a few days, went south very south and I under a week was dead.
It might not be common, but obviously can happen.

(9,952 posts)Thanks for the story. I remember when it first start4ed being talked about and I watched it tracking across the country to where I was, with two little ones, reading up on it.

(65,057 posts)I bought a piano from those guys. They had one with a pretty bad dent & scratch, and insurance cover 2/3rds. So I paid around 28¢ on the dollar.
I asked them if they would haul away my old one, and they were cool!
I bought it from one brother, but knew the other one would be delivering.
Anyway, the morning they're coming he calls and I tell him I need it in the basement.
When they get there, they see 4 steps up to the house, then they have to haul it down an L shaped stairway to the basement.
THEN, I told them, "By the way, my garage is in the basement. If you drive the truck around back, you can roll it right in!"
He said "You rotten SOB! You knew I was sweating this basement thing the whole 25 minutes!"
We had a good laugh.
Like I said, we were pals!
I'm sorry he'll never be there again when I stop in.

(12,659 posts)Just out playing golf on Halloween in San Antonio 7 years ago.
In the hospital that evening delirious with a fever, they induced a coma the next day due to brain swelling. He died five weeks later, too much damage to both his brain and his internal organs. Every time they thought he was recovering enough to bring him out of the coma, the fever would return within 24 hours, and he would have to be sedated again.
It's a nasty disease.

(1,654 posts)Loved B5 so much. The story line of the rise of fascism and threat to freedom was prescient.

(65,057 posts)I'm bummed that none of the 900 channels I have chose to rerun this series.
Yes, I'm talking about you SciFi Channel!
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)has nothing but contempt for the SyFy channel. She dreads hearing about a new show that sounds interesting but is on SyFy because she's so jaded by now that she just assumes they will completely fuck it up.
Yet we keep watching in hopes they might not. They could easily be our favorite channel because we love Sci-Fi but they disappoint us over and over again. And we keep coming back.

(5,721 posts)This great show has also carried on in fine form on Prime after SYFY dropped it.

(4,040 posts)Fans of the series will recognize that phrase.
Babylon 5 was the one series that made Star Trek fans like me nervous.
Could it be that there was something better than Trek?
electric_blue68
(14,906 posts)... of ST way back.
I've watched every Trek since then. I'm really looking foward to S2 of Piccard, Strange New Worlds debut Watching 1Lower Decks (fun!). Most if the movies, too. (not the original cartoon couldn't take the sub-standard to me animation)
Earthshine2
(4,040 posts)In ST-Picard, when the evil robot overlords were coming through the space portal with terrifying awesomeness, I said to myself, "It's the first ones. This is a Babylon 5 moment!"
Perhaps those machine Gods were the same one who hooked up V'ger in the first ST movie.
ST-Discovery is conspicuously absent from your list. I enjoyed it very much. (I have not yet seen season 3.)
ST-The Animated Series, which I watched as a Saturday morning cartoon as a 9-yr old kid, is considered canon (i.e., everything you saw officially happened), so don't diss it too much. The stories were excellent. The voices were true. The animation was quite good for 1973.

(14,906 posts)I think it did remind me of something but not sure
if it was B5 related. Well, I can rewatch w CBS All Access...
Oh... love DISC! (I started part way in S2 watched S1 later) Season 3 is great ...
I categorize it within "The Treks" where as Picard is Jean-Luc gathering up a a crew, a not fully ST Federation crew so to speak so while the show is Trek, it's not at that point totally Federation Trek. I hope that cogent! 😄 It's 4:30+ AM here.😴
And the Pike series hasn't started yet.
Earthshine2
(4,040 posts)So said the Romulan commander to Kirk in Balance of Power.
I know that S3 of Discovery takes place far in the future, so that's outside of "The Treks."
I have very high hopes for Pike. I really like the way the character was played. And the remake of the original Enterprise bridge is so beautiful. Actually, all of the ship command centers as seen in Disc are fabulous.
Apparently, we share a time zone (and perhaps insomnia), as well as a love of fine TV.
Over and out.

(14,906 posts)over the weekend?
It's late where I am but I'll start with...
Delenn getting used to being part human.
When she confronted the Grey Council.
Her warning Sheridan about finding out about the Shadows (though she didn't mention by name) - once
you know you'll never sleep well again!
When she beseeched Kosh to save Sheridan.
Her talking to G'Kar ?was it sacrificing millions to
save billions.
The Wheel of Fire episode.
So much more.
I have some of them on video tapes. But I don't have a working VCR anymore.
If we get that $1,400 stimulus check - I'll hunt down
at least S2,3,4 on DVDs.
Your turn? 🙂
Earthshine2
(4,040 posts)In memory of Delenn ...
When she talks about how we are all merely star stuff.
When she commands the White Star fleet.
When she clutches at the empty space in her bed after Sheridan has died. She was the brightest star in his sky. To her, he was the sky.
electric_blue68
(14,906 posts)Her commanding the Mimbari fleet to protect B5!
Her and Sheridan a GREAT science fiction romance!
When Sheridan is unstuck in time and appears in her cell.
When she breaks into the historians conference saying "Sheridan was a good man, a decent man"
And when she made the rain sound track for Sheridan when he couldn't sleep.
Don't have Amazon Prime. Oh, well. Thx for info, tho.
