A geophysicist from Colorado allegedly dragged a police officer down a set of stairs during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and then bought a plane ticket to Switzerland and attempted suicide in Westchester County in the days after the siege, it was revealed in court Friday.
Jeffrey Sabol, 51, was ordered held without bail at his initial court appearance in White Plains federal court, where a judge called the evidence against him very disturbing and deeply troubling.
That conduct is beyond the pale, Judge Andrew Krause said.

Images also show Sabol holding a police baton against an officers neck during the siege, Assistant US Attorney Ben Gianforte said at the court proceeding Friday.
Prosecutors believe Sabol wrested the club away from another officer in the melee, which may result in additional charges being filed against him.

Sabols federal defender, who asked that he be released on a $200,000 bond, told Krause that Sabol spent a week in a psychiatric center receiving treatment after the riot.
Sabols lawyer also said the defendant is now stable.
The lawyer said Sabols work history is second to none, and that his most recent job was removing unexploded ordnance from federal land for a Colorado environmental company.

(65,048 posts)I moonlighted as a consultant during the decommissioning of an arsenal back in the 90s.
That area is now a national cemetery & protected prairie.
That could be it.
Also, lots of mining at one time.
Perhaps raw explosives still found in bunkers.

(22,129 posts)when they are caught, or admit that yes, they did have a role in the riot, are sorry blah blah blah, etc. Aren't so tough now, are we now, eh, mr. sabol? And I do agree w/ your attorney's characterization of your work history (second to none), since you will never work again...nice, eh?

Many are republicans for reasons I dont understand. Its easy to believe youre smarter than other people in all areas because you are smart in one.
I think part of it is you have to think contrarian sometimes to find the hole or the idea that everyone else missed. Its how you come with new ideas that work. Its easy to forget that most times the idea is a dud.
You see it when geologists or biologists claim global warming is false. I think its even easier to fall into the trap with politics because its so much more subjective than science.
Or maybe Im just spouting on something I dont really know about.

(65,048 posts)As a retired scientist, I've known hundreds, perhaps a thousand scientists & engineers.
I have found scientists tend to lean quite toward dems & and socially liberal ideas.
Engineers tend to be middle, or lean right, with a lot of libertarian tendencies. Socially liberal, fiscally conservative. They run the spectrum, but with 1 being Nazi, & 10 being Marx, I'd put the median for scientists at 6.5-7 and engineers at 4-4.5
I'd put myself at 7.5-8.

(3,131 posts)Im an engineer and agree with that portrayal. I work with some scientists and they are maybe 3-4 on that scale but its a small sample. Ill accept your point.

(312 posts)But Ive seen what youve described among my scientist vs engineer friends.
I chalk it up to the fundamental difference between science and engineering: with science, the goal is expansion of knowledge. Thinking outside of the box and the limits of our understanding.
With engineering, the focus is given these constraints, how do you build a system? I feel like the engineering mindset is conducive to a more rigid type of thinking, one that favors (perceived) stability at the expense of freedom. I blame the lack of liberal arts in an engineering curriculum.

(65,048 posts)I share your reasoning completely.
My contacts are worldwide, and that lean left seems to be not just a US thing.
I've worked in 36 other countries, and find what we're talking about to be mostly true everywhere I've been.

(14,047 posts)notable exceptions can be found in the petroleum and mining industries. I didn't look at the job history to see if this guy is in those categories.

(14,854 posts)... that only 6% of scientists were Republicans. Maybe from about a decade ago? It might be even fewer now.
Not sure if that was only a poll of PhD's.

(4,395 posts)but a lot of scientists and engineers are also on the autistic spectrum and some people on the spectrum find it easy to fall down "research" rabbit-holes and difficult to climb back out of them. Having your brain wired to be fascinated with collecting the most arcane, complex information you can find and enjoying systematizing it in your head can lead you to be an expert in a STEM field but can just as easily make you susceptible to QAnon bullshit. People on the spectrum also tend to take things literally and have trouble working out when someone is being deceptive so they're more vulnerable to online bullshitters.
There's something about "here's an obscure and improbable fact that only you and I know is true" that's catnip to some people on the spectrum.
Not saying that that explains everyone who rioted on the 6th or that that's true of even the majority of autistic people but I do think it helps explain how someone could be a very well respected, well educated scientist or engineer and also come to believe complete crap at the same time.

(51,284 posts)After the attack, the prosecutor said, Sabol booked a flight from Boston Logan International Airport to Zurich, Switzerland, where he would not be able to be extradited to the U.S.
Sabols lawyer, Jason Ser, argued for his clients release on $200,000 bail, saying the man had steady employment for decades Ser said Sabols job, in which he supervises other employees and contractors, involves removing unexploded ordnance from testing grounds for the military and the support of family that includes a longtime girlfriend, an ex-wife, three children and parents.
He said video of the actions by his client were not as clear cut as they had been described by a prosecutor and noted that Sabol was currently charged only with civil disobedience charges that carry a potential maximum penalty of five years in prison.
He said his client was coherent, stable and cooperative with federal law enforcement authorities after he underwent treatment at a psychiatric facility for a week and spent several days at the Westchester Medical Center.
Both the judge and the prosecutor referenced Sabols suicide attempts in the wake of the attack, though Ser told pretrial services his client was no longer suicidal.
Im sorry for what Mr. Sabol has been through since he left the Capitol but I think, your honor, that his suicide attempts can be taken as consciousness of guilt and in some respect really the ultimate flight attempt, Gianforti said. This is a man who just cant face the fact that he is facing a felony charge because of his actions on Jan. 6.

He's also seen on some of the disturbing videos, dragging the Capitol officer down the stairs before this shot was taken.
