minor pet peeve about our "political culture": unity
Yes, I totally get that striving for "unity" is a nice-sounding political goal. Unity always sounds better than divisiveness, internecine warfare, irreconcilable differences, or, to be blunt, just plain political domination.
The ONLY time I know of that we Americans approached anything like unity (and let's not forget the internment of the Japanese Americans) was World War 2. I am not as well-informed about World War One, Korean War or other wars. Now that I think of it, the very early phase of the 1991 Gulf War was close to unity but even that had massive protests in San Francisco and maybe other cities. The 2003 Iraq War was anything but unified in our country. Of course, Vietnam provoked massive disunity in our country.
I'm guessing that aspect of our political culture won't change any time soon, if ever. It's just an extremely unrealistic goal that's very rarely achieved.
To be clear, I'm not criticizing President Biden or his administration. It's the media that annoys me at times.
Trivial rant over, thanks for listening
