(231 posts)It's hurtful to everyone, but especially women, when we shame or make fun of someone's looks, make-up, style, shape, weight, etc.
Even if the target is someone specific, we all feel - consciously or unconsciously - feel the threat. Women who are socialized to believe that our looks and shape determine our worth are particularly harmed.
Thank you for considering this.

(9,290 posts)Style is iffy. Makeup I consider fair game. It's a choice.

(231 posts)Girls and women are punished no matter their choice. Frumpy or slutty. Boring or show-off-y. In or out of style. Make-up or none. Shave, pluck, or don't. You can't win. Some, through grace and determination, find the confidence to not care and simply feel good in their skin. Many don't.
The socialization through advertising and peer pressure is very, very strong!
Of course, other genders may feel this, too.
Anyway, I appreciate your reply.

How many other genders are you thinking of, by the way? I never knew the selection to be what one might call vast.

(59,769 posts)My wife, being a stubborn German, still refuses to age along with me, but who am I to tell her what to do?
Five years ago at a doctor's appointment, she had to fill out some form or other. The receptionist looked it over and told her she had made a mistake with her date of birth. She said she usually remembered that detail, but what was the problem? The receptionist said that for the year she wrote in to be correct, she would have to be 64. She said, "well, I AM 64." The receptionist just stared, and said, "oh," and did the German version of Emily Litella ("never mind!" ).

(231 posts)When we bash people for their looks - especially women - we send the message that looks determine our worth. We're saying that "If you don't get it right, we'll be laughing at you. You won't be liked and respected. You won't belong."
It hurts. It's scary.

(9,606 posts)I don't care if it hurts her or is scary to her - fuck her.
And why that saying something negative about someone else hurts you, I just don't get. You must be very young if you are still worried about not belonging because you haven't gotten it right.
I'm a crabby and FAT old lady, just fyi. And welcome to DU, but you better put your big girl panties on around here.

Whenever anyone talks about a woman's looks, whether in a bad or good light, they lose 5% points in favorability during an election.
Men can have their looks talked about in negative and positive lights and it does not affect their favorability one iota.
I'm doing what every Republican does to a Female Democratic candidate and politician, talk about their looks, because if Democrats take the high road and Republicans always take the low road, assholes like Bachmann, Blackburn, Boebart and Majorie Taylor Greene will keep get elected or re-elected to office.
Now, in a perfect world, what you are saying is 100% correct, but not in the political arena, especially a political arena where Republicans pull out all the stops to make sure female Democratic candidates are denigrated. This includes FOX News and other RW media--they all know this is how to tear down female Democratic candidates, and whenever you hear them speak, the first thing they go to on a female Democratic politician is their appearance--what they wear, the brands, how expensive or inexpensive the clothing and accessories are (yes, dinged for spending too much, and spending too little--we saw this with AOC's outfits), the fashion style, the makeup, etc... and they drone on and on about it.

I recall Trump moving pretty quick in his first week too. In fact for most of his first years he'd be making so many bad decisions, more than one a day. So much so that the MSM news couldn't even keep up with doing a proper job of investigating each one.
One of the very first decisions was to nix the Obama rule about not hiring anyone with a past criminal white collar conviction to bid for federal project contacts. Since that includes many Republican supporters, Mitch had to reverse it just for his corrupt pals to get in on the action in the new Trump admin.
