Just an observation.
Legislative: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, President Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy
Executive: President Joe Biden
Judiciary: Chief Justice John Roberts
All Catholics.
Again just an observation.

(32,634 posts)... especially here in the US, Catholics aren't a monolithic voting bloc that some people seem to think. In the 50s and early 60s, it would have been possible to predict "Catholic" attitudes towards birth control, divorce, pre-marital sex, extra-marital sex, abortion, etc. - but times have changed. Opinions have become nuanced, voting blocs have been fractured.
A person's political views and voting tendencies can no longer be predicted by their religion (or lack thereof), especially when it comes to American Catholics. Many of today's Catholics were raised in that faith, but as adults we barely consider ourselves as part of the church any more. (I put myself in that category, as do many of my friends.)
Just sayin'
BarackTheVote
(938 posts)and very much a progressive. To me, the most important moral teachings are the beatitudes and the golden rule. And aint no Republican legislating based on the beatitudes, I can tell you that!
FakeNoose
(32,634 posts)... based on the Catholic stance against abortion. I believe abortion is wrong (for me), but I also believe it's a woman's right to decide whether or not she wants to be a parent. At the same time there are many liberal/progressive teachings in other areas, including a liberal attitude towards homosexuality for example. If any Catholic got divorced, it used to mean they had to quit the church, but not any more.
It's a wide spectrum of attitudes, and there is more tolerance now that ever before.

(53,032 posts)Catholics are allowed in leadership positions after centuries where they were excluded. Catholics do not "control" the government. Your post sounds like papist conspiracy crap.

I haven't gone to mass in like a decade so it's been a while since I've done some ritualized symbolic cannibalism. I just had a conversation with a friend over whether it's safe for gluten free Catholics to take communion since it's the body of Christ, not flour.

(146,288 posts)Well, here's my observation:
Who gives a damn? Christians of all stripes control every branch of government.
I'm an atheist. Where's my representation?
Religion is irrelevant. Policies are relevant. The two are not related.
Again just an observation...

(7,510 posts)President Pro Tem is not a powerful position.
Harris - Baptist, raised Pentecostal with some Hindu leanings, married to a Jew
Schumer - Reform Jewish
McConnell - Baptist
What it most notable is the decline of the Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and Methodist establishment.
