Mitt Romney Wants Parents to Receive Hundreds of Dollars Per Child Monthly Till They Turn 18

Senator Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican, put forward a plan that would provide the vast majority of American parents with $350 per month for each child under 6 years of age, and $250 per month for children ages 6 to 17.

The Romney plan comes as Democratic lawmakers are working to put forward a similar proposal. President Joe Biden has pushed for significantly expanding benefits going to children.

Romney's Family Security Act could potentially become a point of bipartisan compromise, as Democrats aim to increase child benefits through Biden's proposed $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package.

-snip-

Under Romney's plan, parents earning a combined income of $400,000 would receive $350 per month for children from birth until 6 years of age. Parents would then receive $250 per month for children 6 years of age through the age of 17. The benefits would be capped at up to $1,250 per month for each family. The GOP lawmakers plan would distribute the money through the Social Security Administration.

Might be worth looking at but I'd set the upper treshold a little lower. I can't imagine any family with a combined income of $400,000 a year needing assistance.

Which means that it will get ZERO Republican support.

But, if you want to give a tax cut to Jeff Bezos' golden toilets on his massive yachts, well then, now you're talking Republican support.

Making over 400k a year also have children under 18?

Probably some, but I bet it's an overall small number so it's insignificant in the final total.

Yang makes good points about UBI being for everyone, not just people under X income.

I think it should be higher per child though. Make it $500 a month and cap it at 3 kids. It also shouldn't stop at 18, it should carry through until separation from HS or 18, whichever is later.

I don't mean to be smarmy at all.

If Mormons have used up the year supply of canned goods under the house, imagine the suffering elsewhere ....

I've got a friend who makes $400K a year or so, and she is always complaining about how she's got nothing left at the end of the month, with three kids in private school at $2000 a month tuition each. She looked horrified at me when I said, my kids actually went to school for free-- you should try public education sometime.

She also said that of course I couldn't understand that the tuition payments were added to the $6K/mo mortgage payment because they needed a 6BR house (1 for each kid, 1 for parents, 1 for guests, 1 for office, natch). I said unsympathetically that she should have thought of that before she had THREE children! And that maybe two of them could share a room!
I had to laugh-- but she was kind of distraught, talking about how they were "incomed out" of potential college scholarships and it just wasn't fair.

Anyway, no matter how much people make, they poormouth, at least the ones who are income-rich, and not real-wealth rich.

Half my family's Mormon (LDS), half my family's Catholic.

Don't care for either man-made religion. Jesus may have been okay. But these putzes who use his name to fluff their vanity; well, not allowed to say how those guys need to be dealt with; that's something only (mostly white) men are allowed to do without fear of overzealous cops.

to meet your child's private school tuition, put them in a public school.
