One day after receiving her first dose of Modernas Covid vaccine, Luz Legaspi, 72, woke up with bruises on her arms and legs, and blisters that bled inside her mouth.
She was hospitalized in New York City that day, Jan. 19, with a severe case of immune thrombocytopenia a lack of platelets, a blood component essential for clotting.
The same condition led to the death in January of Dr. Gregory Michael, 56, an obstetrician in Miami Beach whose symptoms appeared three days after he received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Treatments failed to restore his platelets, and after two weeks in the hospital he died from a brain hemorrhage.
It is not known whether this blood disorder is related to the Covid vaccines. More than 31 million people in the United States have received at least one dose, and 36 similar cases had been reported to the governments Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, VAERS, by the end of January. The cases involved either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, the only two authorized so far for emergency use in the United States.

Seems like the condition is so rare that it's hard to tell if the vaccine is the cause.

(18,402 posts)Is as follows:
The incidence (how many people are diagnosed each year) of ITP among adults in the USA is estimated to be 3.3 per 100,000 adults/year. The prevalence (how many adults have ITP at any time) is 9.5 cases per 100,000.

So 36 cases out of 31 million vaccines is less than the average normal incidence. That said, it is possible that it is an extremely rare effect of the vaccine. Certain chemo regimens can cause it, as well as cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. Perhaps its possible that some of these people had undetected underlying conditions ... or that they had abnormal reactions.

(6,398 posts)...is people sharing this on facebook as a reason not to get the vaccine. When we don't even know if that was the cause, but if you so much as have a really smelly fart, the anti vaxers roll with it.
It's amazing, they complain that anyone who dies due to COVID was just labeled that way for funding...and if another undermining condition results in death...they blame the vaccine. Good news is, they won't be in line ahead of me when I can get the shot.
And this is dark, but, hey, there will be less republican voters after all this.
