Senior Democrats are pushing Joe Biden to honour is election pledge and appoint the Supreme Court's first female African-American justice.
Mr Biden promised to appoint a black woman to the bench just before last year's South Carolina primary which rescued his then faltering campaign for the Democratic nomination.
Although there is no current vacancy, the jostling has already started on Capitol Hill in anticipation of a seat becoming vacant.
Stephen Breyer, one of three liberal justices left on the nine-strong Supreme Court, is 82 and should he step down Mr Biden will be able to make a nomination at a time when, thanks to vice president Kamala Harris's casting vote, the Democrats has a majority in the Senate.

(31,261 posts)She seems to be striving to be leading an executive branch of government, and I believe that she would be excellent at that.

(25,476 posts)First, the "pushing" would seem to be a bit premature.
Second, Biden pledged to do so. Unless they have good reason to believe he's not going to uphold that pledge, this seems a bit unnecessary.
Not every issue needs constant, insistent pressure, particularly when President Biden already appears to be on the side of the issue they support.

(31,261 posts)President Biden has said that is one of his goals. There are a number of qualified, age 50ish Black women on Circuit and Appeals Courts, all were Supreme Court Clerks before moving on to their judicial careers. President Biden will have an excellent group to pick from.

(21,620 posts)but there is always a list of potential nominees should a vacancy open, so I'm sure they just want to know a black woman is at least "on the list"
of course there is no need to wait for a vacancy if we simply create one by expanding the courts to reflect the will of the voters...... clearly that is something America wants based on how they voted in 2020. But there are many other priorities we need to gt to first.......

(3,635 posts)and can fill it. Who knows what will happen after 2022 - McTurtle will block everything if he takes over again. IIRC Obama wanted RBG to retire before we lost the Senate in 2014.
