Federal authorities are charging a Pennsylvania police officer over his involvement in the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill.
Joseph Fischer, a patrolman at North Cornwall Township Police Department, is being charged with obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, knowingly entering a restricted building without lawful authority, violent entry and conduct on Capitol grounds, and obstruction of justice/Congress.
The charges come after authorities said Fischer posted video of himself on Facebook charging a line of police officers on Capitol Hill during the insurrection, which unsuccessfully tried to prevent Congress's certification of the Electoral College results.
Fischer wrote in one Facebook comment that "entry into the Capital was needed to send a message that we the people hold the real power." He added in a private message that he "may need a job" after it was revealed he participated in the insurrection.
He added that he had spoken with his chief, who informed him that being fired could be the "price I have to pay to voice my freedom and liberties which I was born with and thusly taken away," though he added he had "no regrets" about his actions.

A Pennsylvania police officer has been charged for his role in the Capitol riots after allegedly posting a video of himself rushing a line of law enforcers. Joseph Fischer, a patrolman at North Cornwall Township Police Department, is facing several charges, including obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, for his role in the Jan. 6 siege. The township released a statement Friday that Fischer was arrested by the FBI Friday and has been suspended without pay.
According to a criminal complaint, the day after the riots, Fischer posted a video on Facebook of himself charging towards a line of police officers while appearing to shout hold the line and motherfuckers. Prosecutors allege that Fisher also had a physical altercation with at least one officer before falling to the groundbefore he eventually made it inside the Capitol.
In a private Facebook message on Jan. 7, Fisher also revealed he may need a job [after] word got out that I was at the rally ... lol, according to the complaint. [T]he FBI may arrest me ... lol, Fischer wrote. I know they are targeting police who went. Later in the conversation, Fisher admitted that he spoke with his police chief about attending the riotsaying he told his boss that losing his job might be the price I have to pay to voice my freedom and liberties which I was born with and thusly taken away. I told him I have no regrets and give zero shits, Fischer wrote in the Facebook message. Sometimes doing the right thing no matter how small is more important than ones own security.

(3,544 posts)Until he was released on r and r the judge gave him certain conditions. Until his release he was held in Dauphin county jail in harrisburg PA. It is probably one of the worst county jail in PA. When I read that I got quiet a laugh. Bet he has a lot of regrets now.

The day after patrolman Joseph W. Fischer allegedly stood at the front of the pack pushing against the police during the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, he boasted to a contact that he had no regrets, despite his concerns that the FBI might arrest him. In a Facebook message, Fischer indicated he had already defended himself to his boss, the police chief in North Cornwall Township, Pa.
I told him I have no regrets, Fischer wrote, according to a federal criminal complaint filed Friday.
Fischer was eventually arrested on multiple federal charges and suspended without pay. Less expected was that the boss to whom Fischer allegedly defended himself is off the job as well.
North Cornwall Township Police Chief John Leahy was temporarily placed on paid administrative leave, the townships board of supervisors announced in a news release Monday. The board, which did not respond to a request for comment, did not explain why Leahy had been placed on leave, saying only that an interim chief would serve in his place until the townships inquiry into Fischers alleged actions concludes. . . .

Brian Harrell, a former Department of Homeland Security official, told The AP it is obviously problematic when extremist bad actors have backgrounds in law enforcement and military. He told the news organization in January, Mny have specialized training, some have seen combat, and nearly all have been fed disinformation and propaganda from illegitimate sources. They are fueled by conspiracy theories, feel as if something is being stolen from them, and they are not interested in debate. This is a powder keg cocktail waiting to blow.
