Sixty years ago, my parents brought my sister and me to the United States to build a new home for our family. Today, I am the first immigrant to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security. It is an honor, a privilege, and an awesome responsibility.

(833 posts)9. The idea of a 1st generation immigrant
ascending to the post most responsible for protecting his new country is staggering and memorable.
The Preamble to the Constitution says that our purpose is to "form a more perfect Union." When we can reach into the vast pool of immigrants and find a man of such quality, we're headed in the right direction: we're making use of ALL our resources. We are a nation of immigrants, and with Mr. Mayorkas's ascendency we acknowledge that fact in the most emphatic terms. My hat is off to Mr. Mayorkas for this great achievement and to President Biden for selecting him.
