Acting U.S. Capitol Police chief Yogananda Pittman testified on Thursday that cellphone records show former USCP chief Steven Sund requested National Guard support from the House sergeant-at-arms as early as 12:58pm on Jan. 6, but he did not receive approval until over an hour later.
Why it matters: Sund and former House sergeant-at-arms Paul Irving clashed at a Senate hearing on Tuesday over a dispute in the timeline for when Capitol Police requested the National Guard during the Capitol insurrection.
Irving insisted that he has no recollection of receiving the request until after 2pm. Lawmakers are looking for accountability over that hour of lost time, when pro-Trump rioters were able to breach and ransack the Capitol.
"I did not get a request at 1:09 that I can remember," Irving, who resigned after the insurrection, testified. "The first conversation I had with chief Sund in that timeframe was 1:28, 1:30. In that conversation, he indicated that conditions were deteriorating and he might be looking for National Guard approval."

"I don't remember" is the phrase that keeps him out of a contempt of Congress charge.

(8,333 posts)Chief Sund said 1:09, Chief Pittman said 12:58, Mr Irving said 1:30 ish
Chief Sund said Irving and Stenger were together Stenger went to the senate at 1:15 and Irving was still on the House Floor.
Takes a few minutes to walk from House to Senate.
Are people lying, is there confusion in the time line, could Chief Pittman, Mr Sund, Mr Irving all be telling the truth in what they know...

(8,333 posts)The problem with calling someone is that they are not always able to answer.
Both the House and Senate Sergeant at Arms were on the Floor of the House for the beginning of the Joint Session of Congress which started at 1. You can see Paul Irving Still on the Floor of the House as late as 1:15 and Michael Stenger leaves the House to bring the Senate back to their Chamber at about that time. Mr Sund said he spoke to them and they were together so that would move the timeline even further back. CSpan time stamps their video every couple of minutes.
