With the refusal of Republicans to admit that Joe Biden won the Presidency in a fair election, and with their re-invigorated support for the former president, it does cast an uneasy doubt on where we are as a nation?
How much of the military is loyal to our country and our Constitution and how many are loyal to Trump and the insurrectionists? We don't know, but we would hope the huge majority would support the former. It would not take a huge number. Only a small number that are willing to act. Is our military prepared for such an event?
There are a lot of questions that arise with the continued support of the disgraced former *resident by almost the entire Republican Party. They have come to the conclusion that they cannot survive without him. They believe their base would desert them. They are running scared. They are all complicit in the attempted overthrow of a free and fair election if they continue in the direction they are going. They need to understand the gravity of their actions.
Perhaps it is time to take the threat seriously? Perhaps the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of Defense should have a military unit ready to defend our Capitol in a moment's notice, if it is required? With live ammunition. We cannot permit another attack like the last one. No one should have any doubts that they will be met with the full force of the US Military if they attempt another attack like that of January 6th.
Also, perhaps the FBI should monitor the CPAC Convention this weekend very closely. They should watch the interactions and the language of the co-conspirators that join with Donald J Trump.
Also, they should monitor very closely the social media outlets of these criminals that have betrayed our country.
Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

(60,015 posts)Insurrectionists, white supremacists, BIG LIE people embedded in lots of places like so many tumor cells.
The BIG LIE still being passed around.
The media still playing both sides, holding Biden and Democrats to a standard republicans could never meet.
It's pretty bad, to my mind.

(4,079 posts)and with each passing day, it feels like these folks are 'rewriting history' for the cameras, for the media outlets, even to themselves,,,,, Do Josh Hawley & Paul Gosar & Andy Biggs & Ted Cruz & the Former Guy and all the others think they are going to get away with what they did?? At this point in time it seems like they might,,,,
I felt a glimmer of hope earlier this evening with the story on MSNBC that videos of January 5th 'reconnaissance tours' have been passed to law enforcement,,,,
The whole thing is just confusing & frustrating.

(26,587 posts)If only a tiny number of swing states change their election laws to enable R/Q legislatures to choose electors, it will happen almost inevitably in the next presidential election.
The R/Qs are patient.

(26,587 posts)with one foot on a banana peel IMO. It won't necessarily take violence to push it over. Not that there won't be plenty of violence afterwards.
Sorry for my current pessimism. I actually don't want my family living in this country by the time of the 2024 election.

(111,103 posts)There will not be a free and fair election in 2022 or 2024, unless we can change course? With all the efforts to change the election laws and with the voter suppression efforts of the GOP.

(21,360 posts)the opposite is occurring. Just about all of the Republican controlled states are making it harder for Democrats to vote. I just got my notice, in Pa. from my county election board, they wanted to know if I wanted to vote by mail again this year, well I do. Guess what is different this year? I had to provide my driver's license number.

Next, they will be asking for a contribution to the RNC as a substitute for a poll tax?

But yes, there are plenty of GOPers who believe that prosecutions are fantasy. Until it happens.

(1,967 posts)Most Republican congressmen and senators would love to install Trump as dictator of the US, and they will not stop trying. Only seven Repub. senators voted to impeach Trump. Now the Republican party has let the seven know they are no longer welcome in the party.

(50,560 posts)The Tenthers (people who believe any amendment after the 10th is illegitimate) will be fomenting an even worse insurrection, with more guns this time, to make sure Trump is inaugurated on March 4.
Since I am a firm believer in dealing with shit right when it comes up, I recommend emplacing a battery of 155mm self-propelled howitzers on the parade field at Fort McNair. If an insurrection starts, we first drop three volleys of white smoke on them. If they won't leave, we change to tear gas shells. If they STILL won't leave, ram Excalibur rounds into the tubes and fire for effect.

(15,286 posts)A few weeks ago, I heard a theory that the white supremacists and their ilk used Trump more than he used them.
There are distinct groups of Trump supporters imo. You have the cultists who make up the majority. They love that Trump says out loud what they're thinking and he will somehow save them from a changing and diversifying American that scares them. You have garden variety Rs who like the tax cuts, dergulation and conventional republican economic policies. Then you have the real racists, xenophobes, homophobes, etc.
This last group are the ones who showed up at the Capitol. The Trump rally, which was widely known in advance, gave them the necessary cover for their plans. Lots of people showed up on Jan 6th and most of them were peaceful despite the angry rhetoric. Having been to a few rallies, for a presidential appearance, no one attending gets inside the barricades without being screened for weapons, etc. The rioters had to be on the fringes or outside the checkpoints for them to have had all the arms/weapons they brought into the Capitol. This was the best chance for white supremacists/neo-nazis, etc to live their dream of overthrowing the government. They took it, but failed.
The insurrectionist leaders were the ones who actively participated, now they are all being rounded up and will pay for their sedition. That's why in military operations, command and control is always a top target. This is what's happening to the insurrectionists.

(111,103 posts)But, the problem is that the "leadership" goes much higher than those that have been arrested up to this point.

(15,286 posts)the politicians. They are all hat and no cattle. They talk a good game, but they are never going to risk their lives or jobs by taking a personal risk themselves.
We can see from the defense attys of the arrested rioters that they have no problem turning against the pols who summoned them and each other. This is a group to be mocked, not feared.

(111,103 posts)...but we don't know how many more are out there?
It will be interesting to see how many show up at his next "rally"? Which he may announce at his star performance at CPAC?
I think the extremists and the white nationalists and the Proud Boys are still very much a threat.

(36,312 posts)And many of them are so out of touch with reality that they are unable to to formulate plans that have a reasonable chance of success.
I live in a very red part of Michigan and the Trump flags and signs are long gone. The last Trump Caravan in these parts happened before the election . People have moved on.
To be sure, there are cranks and kooks who can cause mayhem but they have no chance of toppling our government. The rioters at the Capitol look to be a bunch of incompetent boobs who didn't know what to do when they took over the Capitol and had no plan for afterwards and are being turned in by family, co-workers, ex's and even their bankers.

(2,574 posts)to overthrowing our democracy and our government, and installing a fascist dictatorship, by any means possible.
The Republican party is the primary enemy of the United States. They are an immediate threat, and a clear and present danger, to our, nation, our democracy, our Constitution, and the safety, security, liberty, and well being of all Americans.
The divide between American democrats and American fascists is undeniable. The Republican party has become the American Nazi party. We must steadfastly unite against them in massive numbers, and successfully quarantine them from power through democratic and legal processes. How the Biden Administration, and the Democratic party, exercise their democratic, legislative, and judicial power will determine the fate of democracy in America.
Conservative Democratic Senators like Joseph Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema must decide if they want the United States to remain a democracy, or if they want to go down in history as the sole reasons that our country becomes a full blown authoritarian, white supremacist, christian nationalist, fascist dictatorship.
The clock is ticking.
