Following the passage of President Biden's $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill, one Republican congressman finds himself with little recourse but to impotently beg his fellow Republicans to return billions in relief aid to the federal government.
Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., who is set to meet with Donald Trump this week at Mar-a-Lago, is beseeching states and cities across America to refuse federal aid and put politics over policy. In a missive sent to governors and mayors just after the bill was approved on Wednesday, Scott tarred the piece of legislation as "massive, wasteful and non-targeted." He encouraged state and local leaders, by way of sending back the aid, to demand that Congress "quit recklessly spending other people's money."
"By rejecting and returning any unneeded funds, as well as funds unrelated to COVID-19," his letter read, "you would be taking responsible action to avoid wasting scarce tax dollars. After all, every dollar in this package is borrowed."

Scott wrote that refusing the money is "simple and common sense," given that "10% of this monstrosity" (i.e. the relief bill) is "wholly unrelated to responding to the pandemic." American taxpayers, he said, "should not be used as bonus cash to plug budget holes caused by decades of poor fiscal management. This is not a taxpayer-funded bailout; it is a reimbursement for specific, COVID-related expenses."

(34,137 posts)He had moved back home to take care of my mother in law - which he did for the last ten years of her life. He earned pocket money by selling stuff on eBay, but was not poor enough for welfare or "rich" enough to afford the ACA at all. So while being the care taker for his mother he went without any health care at all.
This is a man who had served ten years in the Navy, earned a decent living in various jobs over the years, but who had a bad knee after an accident at work - which was not covered since at that point he was an independent contractor. And got screwed because he was making sure his mother lived as long as possible. She died at 87 of COPD - and probably would have died much sooner if he had not cared for her.
But that is only one of the things I detest Scott for.

But I'm sure he means that the wealth of his fatcat donors must be protected.

Couldn't have anything to do with the mammoth Trump tax cuts for fat cats that you supported, could it?
What's this all about, Ricky?
Thanks to Rick Scott, Trump's tax break for poor people went to Florida's billionaires instead
Heckuva grift, Ricky!

(82,849 posts)Where's that $1,400 going to be spent? Taxpayer Jones pays some on his credit card, freeing up a little credit. He also settles up with his sister, who fronted him $500 back in November. Sister takes the $500 and her $500 from her own stimulus money, and catches up some car payments. The car dealer doles out sister's $1,000 plus some other extra money from other customers to his sales people and office staff, each of whom use that supplement to their income to catch up bills of their own. Consumer confidence, having a little cushion, gets a hefty bump. The improving pandemic situation gives local businesses a chance to open back up, and customer bases turn out with money to spend. Store clerks, line cooks, and millions of others get some money to cover the next month before they can get their Covid shots, and others are back to work.
Rick Scott and his overrich ilk have more money than they know what to do with, and hold their money closer than ever. And they want everyone else who isn't flush with cash to do as they do. Rick Scott isn't hungry. He's not going to get evicted. He's still drawing a steady paycheck, even if he doesn't show up for work. That shameless motherfucker inflicts a cruelty he'll never experience and calls it virtue. As Shakespeare said, Scott jests at scars though he's never felt a wound.
