biz owner that doesn't like employees to quit, final pay as 500 pounds of pennies dumped in driveway

Mound of pennies dumped in man's driveway; he blames feud over final paycheck

A Peachtree City man claims a bitter feud over a final paycheck ended with 500 pounds of pennies delivered to his driveway.

Andreas Flaten said when he submitted his two-week notice in writing last November, hell hath no fury like his frustrated boss.

"He froze and stared at me for like a straight minute...I remember this so clearly...he gets up, puts his hands on his head, walks out the door and disappears for like an hour,” said Flaten.

----------

Flaten stored the pennies in his garage inside a large wheel barrel.

"Brand spanking new wheel barrel that is full to the brim. The ... wheels are like busted out to the side, flat..." he said.

Flaten and his girlfriend said all of the pennies are covered in some type of oil, and cannot be cashed in until they are cleaned.

CBS46 is working to get the owner's side of the story. Several after hours calls to Walker Luxury Autoworks have not been returned.

Pennies have not been considered legal tender for all debts for years, and I seem to recall at least two cases where this sort of stunt was rejected by a court as not being a valid form of payment.

Although we no longer use one and two cent coins. There was a limit to how many coins were defined as 'legal tender'; can't remember how much it was. Maybe 20c or 50c of coppers. I suspect the same law still applies to any coins, with larger limits.

Dumping on my driveway is not the proper delivery of my owed paycheck.

As far as I know, those pennies were picked up by junkers roaming the neighborhood.

I would tell him “Sorry you lost $900 dollars in change but there is still the matter of the pay you owe me. Do we need to go back to court?”

Peachtree City is located in western Fayette County in the southern Atlanta metro area. It is bordered to the west by Coweta County and to the north by the Town of Tyrone. It is crossed by Georgia State Route 74 and Georgia State Route 54. SR 54 leads east 10 miles (16 km) to Fayetteville, the county seat, and southwest 17 miles (27 km) to Luthersville. Newnan is 12 miles (19 km) to the west via SR 54 and SR 34. SR 74, the Joel Cowan Parkway, runs through the west side of Peachtree City, leading north 6 miles (10 km) to Tyrone and 11 miles (18 km) to Interstate 85 near Fairburn. Downtown Atlanta is 31 miles (50 km) to the north via SR 74 and I-85.

Turn right on Peach Tree Drive, go two blocks and turn left on Peach Tree Circle, make the second right on Peach Tree Court....

Let the business owner pay for the mess he caused, legal expenses, etc., and be required to haul the pennies away. Guessing coating them with oil to make them unspendable violates some law also.

I know some great small business owners, the good ones are humble and look at their employees as the reason they can have a business. But I know too many of the other kind, they think starting a small business turned them into a god, they think they are so special and view their employees as dependents who should be thankful they allow them to live. Sounds like this guy was the 2nd type.

The greed and self importance of too many small business owners is a pox on this nation. They overinflate everything they think they've accomplished and build themselves up into these superheroes in their own minds. It ends up excusing any and all behavior towards their workers.
