These asylum seekers are fleeing countries which have been flooded with guns and ammunition originating in the USA.

Our value system here in the USA places a high priority on the abundance of guns and ammunition.

The consequence of such abundance of arms is rampant violence and criminality throughout our hemisphere for which we must bear the blame.

When populations flee the threat of violence in their own countries due to a problem we have created, we have a moral obligation to grant them asylum.

It is the cost of freedom, and a cost which we as a nation have bargained for.

More than living in “poverty and violence,” Hondurans are in fact engulfed in a narco-state whose leadership is supported by the United States. They suffer from widespread corruption, gender violence, gang control, land-grabs, and drought driven by climate change.

The U.S. supports a corrupt government there.

2. Blowback

Since the early 1950s the US military has intervened dozens of times in Central America, usually to depose leaders we disapproved of, and back those who would do our bidding.  Men, money and arms flooded into Central America, rightwing death squads were organized and US-backed dictators employed all manner of terror, torture and murder to silence their own people. These conflicts devastated economies, displacing generations of Guatemalans, Salvadoreans, Nicaraguans, Hondurans and others. This might explain why migrants come north.

3. This is a problem, and I've recently read news reports that the U.S. is the largest

supplier of weapons around the world. We need to change this.
