Los Angeles Air Force Base will serve as a field command site for the U.S. Space Force. The military will establish the Space Systems Command at the base near Los Angeles International Airport, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday. This is a critical investment in Californias vital aerospace and defense industries, and it represents a slew of new good-paying jobs as we continue to rebuild our economy better than before, the statement said.
The field command will have nationwide authority over launches and procurement for the Space Force, the statement said.
The Space Force operates as part of the Air Force, much like the Marine Corps is a separate service but is overseen by the Navy. Space Force currently is far smaller than any other branch of the military, and is acquiring the standard trappings of a service, including an official flag, logo, seal and doctrine.
No timetable was offered.

(26,404 posts)LA and a permanent military deployment made me think of Louisiana (such as Barksdale AFB in Shreveport), not Los Angeles.

I live in Austin Texas and have always wondered what those people in Austin Minnesota and Austin Nevada thought about their more advertised namesake.

Love the blatant Star Trek logo ripoff, so very surreal. So kooky.

(26,404 posts)So, the question of "who inspired whom" is going to be one of those bar-inspired debates. In truth, the US Army Air Command and later the US Airforce have used the upward delta iconography as early as 1942. It was updated for space us in 1961. Star Trek stole it in 1966 for their own iconography.

So, anyone in Austin - meet you somewhere in S. Austin, buy you a beer and we can have this debate. (After I finish my second shot and the two weeks lag - tentatively mid-May)

(10,156 posts)so there's a historical connection.
Now if they can tell the difference among Teledata, Teradata, Teladyne, and Teradyne (all customers during a beta test I once managed and all in the LA area) I'll be impressed.
