NC Bill Orders Any School Employee to ‘Immediately’ Notify Parents if a Child ‘Exhibits Gender Nonconformity’

A North Carolina bill attacking the state’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and especially transgender and queer or questioning youth and young adults violates their right to privacy and places tremendous power in the hands of any person – regardless of training or expertise – who is employed by, contracted by, or is even a volunteer to any school district, court, or child placement agency.

Senate Bill 514 makes it illegal for any teacher, school administrator, contractor, and even volunteers, among other “government agents,” to not “immediately” inform, in writing, the parents or legal guardians of any child or young adult – up to the age of 21 – if that “minor under its care or supervision has exhibited symptoms of gender dysphoria, gender nonconformity, or otherwise demonstrates a desire to be treated in a manner incongruent with the minor’s sex.”

“The notice shall describe all of the relevant circumstances with reasonable specificity,” the legislation adds.

In other words, the bill’s author, Republican state Senator Ralph Hise (photo), a Trump acolyte, is deputizing every government “agent, employee, volunteer, or contractor of a public child services agency, private child placing agency, court, or school district” to not only determine what constitutes symptoms of gender dysphoria (a medical diagnosis) or gender nonconformity, an entirely subjective belief.

14. I am a media coordinator in NC- many of us are members of

two professional groups. One, a group of media coordinators (librarians), and the other a teacher's "union." In other words, we all keep in touch with folks from all over the state.

We are all aware of this silly assed bill, and the implications.

We truly have some homegrown whacks down here in NC- the one I can't figure out is Virginia Foxx. Bizarre as hell that she gets people up in the mountains to vote for her.

You start singling out students for gender nonconformity, you open the door for all kinds of mistakes, unnecessary emotional trauma in a vulnerable population, not to mention green light the same negative attitudes for other groups deemed less than. This is an expansion of the current thinking within far right groups that only 'the right people' should be able to vote or get healthcare or . . . taken to its extreme even live.

The Nazis didn't suddenly come into power. They came into power through a series of steps, a series of normalizations and repetitive fear-mongering. Ugly words became not so shocking. Ridiculous genetic theories became half-way understandable, particularly if you belonged to the right-people club.

Hated and rejected were the poofy girlie dresses. Angry Bird and Mario Brothers tee shirts and shorts were worn by the youngest generation with enthusiasm and were definitely better for tree climbing attire.

Mom and her girl cousins wore overalls and pigtails and enjoyed horseback riding, no reins, just manes and definitely no saddles. They were for sissies. The name for girls without gumption. Dresses were hated but required for Sunday School.

We would be in "a world of hurt" as the saying goes, if we had to follow this horrendous law.
