Despite McConnell's orders to GOP Senators to vote against Gupta this morning
GOP Senator Lisa Murkowski voted with the Dems to advance the nomination of Vanita Gupta
VP Harris' tie-breaking vote wasn't necessary
GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski will vote on Wednesday to confirm highly qualified Vanita Gupta to the No. 3 position at the Justice Department, blowing up her partys effort to mount a united front in opposition.

(6,057 posts)Along with susan collins, you can always count on their votes when you don't need them. I'll wait to praise them for their independence when they vote in a manner that actually matters.

(14,731 posts)shes happy to play along when its not actually important for her to do so. It helps with the re-elections, see.
When her vote would actually be important? Not so much.

May you continue to do the right thing and ignore MoscowMitch's demands.

That's not likely. First, Mitch probably wants LESS of those people in his caucus. Secondly, she's already demonstrated that she can win a general election as an independent write-in candidate...NOT something to blithely throw away if she's MOSTLY gonna vote with Mitch's side MOST of the time.
Lisa is one of the few people in the Republican Party that can pretty much tell Yertle to go get fucked when she needs to. And both of them know it.

(47,940 posts)I remember she was primaried by a Tea Party idiot and became an independent. Did she ever switch back. It would sure be nice to have her caucus with us.

(54,128 posts)She's the Senator-daughter of a Senator. Hoping she is trying to resurrect a Senate her dad would be proud of. Her dad probably served at the same period as Joe Biden!

(76,460 posts)From wiki:
Vanita Gupta (born November 15, 1974)[1] is an American civil rights attorney. She is the president and chief executive officer of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. From 2014 to 2017, she served as the principal deputy assistant attorney general and head of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, where she was the chief civil rights prosecutor for the United States.[2]
Formerly, she was a civil rights lawyer and the deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, where she oversaw its national criminal justice reform efforts.[3] She has also served as Assistant Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Throughout her career, she has drawn support from a wide range of liberal activists, as well as progressive law enforcement figures, for building support for policing and criminal justice reform.[4][5]
On January 7, 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Gupta to serve as Associate Attorney General.[6] She was confirmed by the Senate on April 21, 2021.

(3,428 posts)Trump is having her primaried, JR is holding rallies against her in her home state. Why stay at a party that doesnt want her?
If she switched just to an independent then Joe Manchin has no power.

(13,003 posts)She and a few other Republican Senators have been declared TOXIC by the Republican party. The Repubs are already campaigning against them, so let the Dems talk them into at least becoming independent, or come over to the dem party and help us pull this country out of a nose dive that Trump and Republicans perpetrated on the entire U.S. Population......
They have nothing to lose.........

(18,579 posts)To help anyone win. The 2 Senators from Georgia are a good example.
The Republicans need more Lisa Murkowskis and less troubled Susans and Marsha Blackburns.
Under The Radar
(3,428 posts)I will certainly take Lisa and Susan Collins and leave you Marsha Blackburn.
Blackburns only power is that she isnt afraid of going on live TV lying and spewing any talking point given to her. She has no remorse for the hundreds of issues that she has been proven wrong on and will never apologize.

Nothing says "civil discourse" like Steve King as your campaign co-chair
https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2017/11/01/nothing-says-civil-discourse-like-steve-king-as-your-campaign-co-chair/
There is no civil discourse left and it is really sad, Governor Kim Reynolds said yesterday, adding, We ought to be able to debate ideas because thats how you get to consensus. Reynolds lamented the vitriol that dominates the current vicious political climate.
Today the Reynolds/Gregg campaign announced that Representative Steve King will be a co-chair. A written statement described the governor as humbled by the endorsement from a strong defender of freedom and our conservative values who is independent, principled, and is fighting the good fight in Washington, D.C.
You can posture as a consensus-seeker, or you can brag about support from a walking highlight reel of mean-spirited and dehumanizing rhetoric. Not both. Yesterdays mini-lecture on civility stemmed from a reporters question about a memorable recent sound bite from Reynolds: the liberals are unhinged and they are out for us.
Unhinged liberals became an instant catch phrase on Iowa Democratic social media feeds. Within days, RAYGUN had rolled out a new t-shirt design for self-styled TOTALLY UNHINGED liberals promoting accountability, a cleaner environment, equal & fair protections for all people.

(376 posts)Tip my hat to Murkowski because she knew that Gupta is imminently qualified and there is absolutely no good reason to vote against this nominee.
Unlike not so moderate Susan Collins from my home state, who shows once again she has not an inkling of bi-partisanship or moderation in her being. She is a total fraud!
Also; with the history of what transpired in 1999 in Tulia, Texas, why didn't John Cornyn recuse himself from Gupta's hearings???
