Lawsuit brought by the League of Women Voters of Florida, Black Voters Matters Fund, Florida Alliance for Retired Americans and individual voters against all 67 Florida counties challenging the voter suppression law, SB 90. The case claims that SB 90s drop-box restrictions, vote by mail repeat request requirement, volunteer assistance ban, deceptive registration warning and food and water ban violate the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
Governor DeSantis signed the bill today after its late-night passage last month. Among the provisions are a ban on the distribution of food and water to voters in line at the polls plucked right from Georgias SB 202and shortened absentee ballot return timelines. The legislation also cuts down drop box hours, limiting their use to only during early voting.
Theres no question that these provisions would make voting in Florida harder. Reducing drop box hours hurts voters who may not have the time to wait in line to cast their ballots in-person. Shortened absentee return timelines unnecessarily put voters franchisement at the mercy of Postal Service delivery times, which Republicans are determined to sabotage. And banning the distribution of food and water to voters in line will make it even harder for them to withstand long wait times in the Florida heat, discouraging turnout.
SB 90 is an affront to Florida voters, and an unconstitutional burden on their right to vote. Governor DeSantis himself has bragged about the secure, successful elections the state held last yearso why is he determined to make it even more difficult for Floridians to cast their ballots?
Its because Republicans cant win on their ideasso theyre changing the rules. I wont let that happen.
You can read the full complaint that was just filed to protect Florida voters here. Ill keep you up-to-date as we fight this legislation in court.

(2,764 posts)They've been filing lawsuits in state after state to stop voter purges and overturn restrictive voting laws, sometimes on their own, sometimes with allied civil rights organizations.
They are working for the For the People Act, the John Lewis Act, and much more.
They're in all 50 states and their hundred year history of nonpartisan work gives them the relationships and respect that makes them effective advocates for voting rights for all.
If you can donate a few dollars, they could definitely put it to good use.
