May 13, 2021 at 6:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
Among the topics discussed in those meetings: how to handle the thorny extradition issues that could arise if an indictment moves forward.
An obscure clause in Floridas statute on interstate extradition gives Gov. Ron DeSantis the ability to intervene and even investigate whether an indicted person ought to be surrendered to law enforcement officials from another state which means that as Mar-a-Lago prepares to close down for the season and Trump relocates to Bedminster, N.J., it isnt just the Florida heat hes leaving behind: He could lose a key piece of political protection.

(4,905 posts)I'm sure the "finest legal minds" who are loyal enough or ignorant enough to represent him have already told him he has better protection in Florida than he would in New Jersey, New York, or Virginia.

If DeSantis tries to intervene with extradition shit, have them also arrest him for obstruction of justice........
Hilary could also spread a rumor that Trump is still secretly being held in Mar a Lago where he is being imprisoned by Bill and Hillary Clinton and Obama in the basement and that all his cult should go there and search the entire compound room for room and free him.......

(22,039 posts)You know, without prejudice.
Trump knows he's under multiple investigations. His lawyers have told him all of his exposures and liabilities. As stupid as Trump is, he's smart enough to know he's a crook facing real problems.
I've got no problem with journalists letting us know what is happening. Don't we hear a lot of complaints when we don't hear any news?

(47,549 posts)are closing in on him from numerous sides and I'm quite sure he knows it. However, after a lifetime of evading the law, I'm sure on some level he believes he can pull it off again. After all he IS a former U.S. president and he probably thinks that provides some kind of protection, but I think he is wrong. There is a first time for everything. He has made far too many enemies and they are not going away.

(914 posts)To take control of Terri Schiavo. Jeb told them they would be met and stopped by the Florida National Guard. The administration backed down.
Interestingly enough, Jeb was hell bent on the state taking possession of her as well. He backed down after exhausting his options in the courts and being told by the Pinellas Park Sheriff Department that they were willing to use force to stop the federal and state government if they attempted to come onto the property to take control.
That was the whole governmental crisis during that time. That is why it was so close to becoming a constitutional crisis. In the end, W and Jeb backed down.

(1,910 posts)You could see this setting up for a while now. Desantis will go through the non extradition fight, eventually lose it, Trump out of the way, and Desantis comes off as the MAGA hero and inherits the base.
One thing about having rats as friends, they are still rats. Desantis is playing Trump as much as the other way around.
I keep saying Desantis is our #1 next threat. He is a very, very crafty authoritarian scum bag who is Trump part 2 in his mind.

Don't know if he'd have any involvement at all in such a process--given that he's on a state and not a federal level--but if he does, I trust him to facilitate everything properly.

(2,000 posts)He WILL be indicted by The State of New York on tax fraud charges at minimum. Despite what these articles try to imply, The State of Florida can't deny extradition based upon the language of some antiquated Florida Statute. A federal judge will approve extradition and US Marshals will take him into custody if he does not surrender. No federal court would rule that the Governor of one State has the power to decide if the indictment from another State is "valid".
keithsw
(436 posts)DeathSantis would not let him be arrested. He owes his entire political career to Trump. Rick Scott crony Adam Putnam was the heir apparent to the Florida Governorship. That is UNTIL Trump gave DeathSantis his endorsement. Sometimes I hate being right. ( And I hope I'm not this time )

(13,536 posts)the governor, if he decides not to let law enforcement officials arrest trump, be arrested for obstruction of justice.
ScratchCat
(2,000 posts)Would be arrested immediately. The claim that The Governor has some say so is patently ridiculous. NY State will have a valid indictment, a valid arrest warrant and a valid extradition approved by a Federal Judge if DeSantis tried anything at all. Trump would be a fugitive from justice. Guess what the Feds can do? His bank accounts? Locked. Phones? Shut off. He would be a prisoner in his home for the rest of his life. US Marshals would take him into custody the second he stepped onto public property. What's Florida going to do? Succeed from the Union to protect a 75-year old con man? Start a war?

(111,305 posts)so I expect only token resistance, most of it from his lawyers.
It's going to be thornier if NY gets him back there, there is no way they can let him out on bail, he's a massive flight risk.
Or maybe that's the idea, brush his enormous butt out of the country, deprive the Nazis of their Fuhrer, show hm up for the frightened little boy he really is, letting them take the rap while he finds a sunny beach somewhere.
ScratchCat
(2,000 posts)would order that his passport be taken and maybe order some sort of "house arrest". No chance any judge on any level orders him held in jail. Not on tax fraud charges. Not a former POTUS. No chance.

(111,305 posts)and possibly his other alter egos, as well. I can see the ankle bracelet in his marble and gilt monstrosity in Dumdum Tower. I agree that he's never going to see the inside of a holding cell with drunks and petty crooks. Secret Service will make sure they treat him like an aristocrat, not a citizen.i
Ankle bracelets can be removed, all he needs are some of Melania's jewelry fabrication tools. A private jet will whisk him off, and one of his alternative passports will serve him well.

(3,282 posts)He could at best delay as long as it took NY to file a suit and the Supreme Court to order them to, which they would based on the Extradition Clause, the Extradition Act, and their own precedent. At that point DeSantis could hand him over or face contempt and the US Marshals/Secret Service would do it for him.
If Trump wants to beat extradition he better leave Palm Beach and head to Sochi.
