(16,067 posts)You have to be from Florida to know how to deal with it.
I was a job site meeting on a soccer field in July. One of the engineers laughed and said I must be a Floridian. I was standing in the shadow of the Field Lighting Pole. It was the only shade within 50 yards.

(142 posts)I always hated how they lacked shade trees in Florida.

(5,528 posts)I am an Engineer in Florida who does a lot of work on soccer fields and other parks projects.
I am originally from Jacksonville but am in South Florida now.
I bet if we compared notes long enough, we would find people we know in common.

(16,067 posts)We installed Musco Lighting on fields.
He's in Jacksonville, FL.

(5,528 posts)I know the guys at MUSCO pretty well and use their lighting all the time.
You might appreciate this...

(9,709 posts)the humidity and heat was too much. Everything down here is air-conditioned. only grocery shop in the early morning or late afternoon. I would rather be here than anywhere else during summer. Much more comfortable.

(142 posts)First it's oppressively hot and humid...
Then there's a crazy thunderstorm with down pours practically every day in the late afternoon to evening. Those storms come out of nowhere and are very strong. Very poor visibility when driving during these storms and hydroplaning is a real threat because it's like a mini flash flood. Florida has the most deaths associated with lightning because of their summertime storms. There's always lots of lightning.
After the thunderstorm, it's right back to being oppressively hot and humid.

(43,189 posts)The heat doesn't bother me--perhaps growing up in a house where my dad stubbornly refused to add central air helped prep me for it. For me, the heat is just an excuse to go swimming.
The afternoon thunderstorms can be problematic but also exciting. And they actually do cool things down a little bit.
Best part of Florida summers though probably are the clouds. They're not the flat, non-descript cumulous clouds that you find most places, but a wide variety of clouds, the best turning into towering cumulonimbus thunderheads that look like ever changing mountains in the sky.
The one drawback about Florida summers: The gnats. Just annoying. They'll come out in evening and just hover around. And often times they'll stage a mass die-in in our pool and we have to skim the surface, only to repeat the cycle in the next day or two.
But overall, summers in Florida are probably my personal favorite season down here. Then again, I'm far from conventional, I suppose.

(142 posts)But my perspective is from growing up in Maine. I lived in Florida for 3 years and moved back to Maine. It seem to me that the storms in Florida did not cool things off to any significant extent. In Maine, you definitely have a real cooling effect with storms... typically at least 10 degrees cooler or more.
Maine summers are the best. Our winters suck, but I figure that's what keeps everyone from wanting to live here and wrecking this place. A lot of people don't want to deal with Maine winters.

(15,896 posts)A lot of Floridians head back north to their homes in the northeast during summer and return to their Florida home in October. They are called snow birds.

(12,309 posts)I did spend a summer down there in West Palm Beach ... and I do remember the humility and flash rains an thunder storms that lasted a few minutes. Shreveport, LA has the thunder storms and humility as well, and when the thunder happens my relatives told me not to move and they put the dogs outside.

(35,359 posts)will impeach Biden if they get comtrol of the House. If a Repubican is the next president they will go after all the past Democratic Presidents. Thinking about it though they probably will either way.

People are ridiculous with this stuff. Listen, in the United States, we do not jail former presidents, we're not going to start now.
