or social distance from others?
I'm going to continue masking as this order is just going to further encourage non-maskers/non-vaxxers not to mask.
I mean who's going to be able to check if people coming into restaurants, planes, buses, theaters, concerts etc. are fully vaccinated or not?
I'll wait until we get more of the population fully vaccinated.

(92,304 posts)those right wingers to get the vaccine
but I will do as you are doing. Continue to mask up and social distance in public, until at least 70% of the populous have been vaccinated, and during flu season, I will definitely mask up

I hope most businesses will continue to require masks of everyone.

(9,481 posts)The non-vaxxers will just not wear masks. He'll, they do it now in some states where there isn't a mask mandate. I would have preferred to wait at least 2 more weeks because there are some people that I know that waited until they were notified that shots were available and that are still waiting on their 2nd shot. It would also allow the teens to get their 1st shots.
But, hey. If more anti-vaxxers and deplorables get Covid, that's a silver lining in my mind.

(7,715 posts)I'm planning to go through the summer, masking and distancing. And I'll encourage my family to do so too.
I remember spending a lot of time in Japan, wondering why many people wore masks for seemingly no reason. I now fully get the reason, and perhaps I will mask as much as I can for the rest of my life, at least indoors.
Let's see (and hope).

(102,324 posts)I would have had no problem arguing both sides.
That said, we now have ended the stigma of facemasks (as the Asian world did with SARS more than a decade ago. Don't feel comfortable without a mask? Wear one. Regardless of how the summer goes, I think their benefit has been amply demonstrated for next winter's flu season (ignoring what may be the case with COVID-19 and its variants).

But if you catch it, you can transmit it to someone who isn't vaccinated.

(1,381 posts)If there is, I agree with keeping the mask mandate. If, however, you are in a place that has ample supplies, then I am not going to alter my behavior based on people who dont follow the science.
Where I live you can walk into any CVS, Walgreens, or Kroger and get the shot without an appointment, so now its on them to protect themselves.

(13,783 posts).. we take as a matter of course that are WAY MORE LIKELY. Some I know about are clot from birth control pill (one in every 100,000), injury or death from car accident, death from flu, etc., etc., etc. It makes no sense to single out COVID as the one minuscule risk that we're unwilling to subject ourselves to.

(8,740 posts)CNN)About 5,800 people who have been vaccinated against coronavirus have become infected anyway, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells CNN.
Some became seriously ill and 74 people died, the CDC said. It said 396 -- 7% -- of those who got infected after they were vaccinated required hospitalization. https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/14/health/breakthrough-infections-covid-vaccines-cdc/index.html

(34,136 posts)Other people will not know I have been vaccinated, so it should make them more comfortable. I did take my mask off at a small business last week - it was only the owners of the business and my husband and me - and we'd all discussed how we were all vaccinated. But when another customer came in, we all put our masks on. Ironically, that was the day that DeSantis had said the mask mandate was over.
Otherwise, I have kept my mask on in public, both inside and out, unless I am in an area where there are no other people in sight.

(28,808 posts)This could last as long as I do, and I'm 65 not in the greatest possible shape. The reasons are that I can still catch the virus and if I do and am asymptomatic could still infect others, and i figure there's going to be another virus coming down the pike. I plan to be like so many Asian citizens who just make masks part of their daily lives. This came about I believe because of MERS and SARS. Now it's SARS-CoV-2.

(8,445 posts)I started wearing a mask right away. The first time I was laughed at it was by an older teenage boy. It was before we were told to wear masks, but my common sense told me that the only reason it wasn't recommended was to save the masks for medical workers.
Then another time later on, after we were told to wear masks, a mask-less woman said, "Nice mask" to me. I'm sure she was just being snarky. I just said thanks, and chalked it up to her being a trumper idiot.
I'm way past the point in life where I care about being laughed at, so it won't bother me if I'm the only mask-wearer in my whole town someday.

(11,595 posts)Businesses, security, first responders, medical staff, etc. should be able to check the app to see if the person is vaccinated or not. If not, and they are maskless and/or not socially distancing there should be a fine generated.
People could be randomly checked so they would never know if their idiocy would be expensive or not.

(50,299 posts)first, you don't know who is or is not vaccinated and a vaccinated person can still contract Covid and, secondly, in a town about 15 miles from me the U.K. variant is reported to be widespread. There's also been an outbreak at the college over there. I'm also afraid that if cases tick up again, it's going to be hard to get this genie back in the bottle. (8,740 posts)Because the Indian mutation B.1.617.2 is now in the US and scientists believe 2 of the mutations on this variant could make the vaccines not very good at neutralizing the variant virus. Some scientists say our vaccines will provide 50% protection against this variant and some say 20% protection. No one knows and lots of disagreement about this. The AstraZeneca vaccine and a Chinese vaccine in India are not working in India but the Indian vaccine Covaxin is supposedly the best to stop these variants. We were supposed to get that vaccine in US end of yr but probably not now. We keep getting double messages about our vaccines and this mutation in US. I think its stupid for the CDC to say this when this mutation is in the US. The CDC just upped the category of this virus while telling us we dont need masks. Makes no sense to me.
The CDC says they don't. This isn't the Trump administration making politically beneficial statements in place of the science.
I've been hearing about how x mutatuon was a game changer and they have all been duds. I'm not worried about the Indian mutation either.

with covid. They were vaccinated with the J and J vaccine which is has less efficacy as the other two. Also it was just reported that fully vaccinated Bill Maher has tested positive for the virus.
I say it's smart to still be cautious and still wear masks while in public indoor spaces for a while...maybe until fall when it's projected that 70% of the population will be fully vaccinated and thus effectively just about reaching herd immunity.

(115,789 posts)which is, apparently, that people who are fully vaccinated now can safely go out in public without masks. I'll probably keep wearing one, at least for now, when I'm inside among other members of the public, just to be on the safe side, and to avoid getting something else. One side effect of staying at home most of the time and wearing a mask when going out is that I never got sick with anything all year, not even a cold. So maybe when winter comes I'll wear a mask no matter what the covid situation is by them.
The people who were opposed to masks weren't wearing them anyhow

(25,261 posts)They've been here before. They've relaxed some restrictions only to see a surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
We know that Memorial Day is typically considered the start of summer. We know that a lot of people will be traveling, meeting with friends and family, having picnics and BBQ's.
If we can make it 2 weeks past Memorial Day without any unusual surges - I'll feel better about these new mask relaxations. So right now - I think it is premature on their part to do this now. After the Holiday I believe it would have been better timing. Heck - it's only another couple of weeks.
As for me - when we go shopping - I'll still be wearing my mask. Cause it will even be harder to determine who is vaccinated. I won't be eating at any restaurants in the near future either.
I'm high risk and even though I'm vaccinated - I'm still playing this cautiously.
