https://jalopnik.com/the-colonial-pipeline-was-fine-but-it-was-shutdown-to-1846911689The cyber attack that shutdown the Colonial pipeline causing a gas panic and stoking fears of gasoline shortages, didnt actually shut down the pipeline. It impacted the billing system at the Colonial Pipeline Co., which shut it down because they were worried about how theyd collect payments.Yes, the fuel-carrying pipeline was shut down last week in order to prevent a company that is entrusted with what should be a public utility from enduring an accounting headache.
snip
The company halted operations because its billing system was compromised, three people briefed on the matter told CNN, and they were concerned they wouldnt be able to figure out how much to bill customers for fuel they received.
snip
Meaning that the pipeline was fine, and all its gasoline was sitting.

(3,913 posts)They certainly didn't profit from this. Occam's Razor says it is much more likely that they were just incredibly lazy and irresponsible regarding their IT security.

Utilities,gas,electric,
phone,tv, water, trash, and healthcare
and including the internet needs to be public owned not private. Some fuckers need to lose thier corporate charters. Forever. Greedy mofos.

(6,207 posts)...most Categories changed from free to Prime customers to Rent or Buy. Old..old..old movies from as far back as the 1990s. Were $3.99 to rent. Many of them were movies I know we watched before for FREE. I thought it was maybe... it is Saturday night, date night, movie night, people won't mind paying $4 bucks.

(36,510 posts)Price changes without notification. Charging for old, old movies & series. Watching a series via one service & the next night it's no longer available & now you have to sign up for a different service, sometimes one that isn't free. NBC has a service that's free, for old shows, but damn, is it crap! Some nights that little loading circle appears every few minutes.

(61,698 posts)to get cable channels, now they are setting up monthly subscriptions for some content. Then they offer a premium sub for no advertisements, at least for the moment.
And On Demand channels will tease with the first episode of a series on a cable nonpremium channel, but you have to subscribe to the streaming channel for the series.

(9,897 posts)I have stopped watching almost anything on Cable or TV and streaming is an ethical decision for people to make on their own; but I won't subscribe to 10 different 'plans' at $14.99 a month to watch 3 or 4 things in that period.
Books have always been a better option anyway...

(12,480 posts)Profit has to go away
The idea that business has to grow is unsustainable.
Planned obsolescence needs to stop.
The rich must be controlled whether they like it or not.
And some corporations need to be shut down and the company shut down and the utilities made publically owned.
The reason nice things go to shit is the profit motive.
Capitalism is no way to live.

(45,528 posts)since he hates pipelines and kills American jobs or something like that.
But since the free market solution is to efficiently raise prices, they'll blame Biden for the increased prices for fuel and everything else. Because socialism is causing inflation. or something like that

(933 posts)All these utilities should be publicly owned, where I live theres city owned electricity and private too alongside , the price and service of the city owned services far exceeds , the price gouging private co.,that cuts power off when it rains.

(52,166 posts)if they were wrong about that, then there could be a massive spill or worse.

(36,289 posts)... that was affected. As soon as I heard that, I figured the pipeline was functioning, they just couldn't process payments/debits. Not a hard guess.

For the love of money
