This is Tanitoluwa Adewumi. He just became Americas newest chess master at 10 YEARS OLD!! ♟👏🏾#BlackExcellence
At first, I thought this meant he was the winner of his age group. But he's the winner of all age groups! Amazing!
10-year-old boy who once lived in a homeless shelter achieves remarkable title: chess master

No clock, take all the time he needs.
All joking aside, it's an achievement, and if hes even a little bit a better human than Bobby Fischer, it's an achievement for the history books.

(2,220 posts)They would set up events where he would walk down the line making moves instantly on all the chess sets in a row and still beat everyone. He remembered all of the chess patterns of every board he had ever seen.
I used to visit him where he worked the night shift at a convenience store and play chess with him. He loved playing with me but I never once beat him. At the time I would look seven to sixteen moves ahead with every variation possible and I still could not beat him. The Waco chess champion was not a grand master. A grand master is a monster well worth fearing!
I absolutely hope this wonderful boy has a wonderful life and continues to enjoy chess all of the days he lives.

(63,221 posts)10 years old and not from a privileged background. What are the chances of that happening.
I am so happy for this young boy and I wish him all the best that life has to offer!

I hope he gets the guidance to not burn out early. He could lead the field and write about thirty books on chess over the next 50 years if he doesn't get exploited and his ego inflated beyond his emotional ability to handle the fame and glory. Who cares if his name is harder to spell than Bobby Fischer? If he's as good as they say, people will know the correct spelling of his name for decades to come.

(7,715 posts)He played the "Game of the Century" in 1956 against Donald Byrne when he was just 13: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_of_the_Century_(chess). As Gary Kasparov said, he saw things no one else could see. As a formerly avid player myself, I could see one or two moves ahead. Folks like Fischer could see many, many moves ahead and could plan attacks or defenses that very few could understand until you reviewed the game historically and then saw the amazing brilliance.
Here is that game, with Fischer being the black pieces:
And my understanding is that during the 1972 World Chess Championship against Boris Spassky, Fisher's playing was so brilliant during one game that the in-person audience in Reykjavik gave him a standing ovation, including Spassky himself!
Fischer really lost his way and became an exceedingly awful person in his last few years.
I wish this young gentleman all the successes of Fischer, and none of the downsides.

(1,991 posts)Fischer got Byrne in that windmill and picked him apart. Byrne's biggest mistake was not castling earlier.
I wish young Mr. Adewumi much success and I hope his love for chess lasts a lifetime.

(90,865 posts)He has taught chess to any kid who will sit still long enough: our daughter, our son, our oldest grandson, at least one great-nephew. Its really fun to watch the interactions.
And no, I never have.

(8,930 posts)I think people who have the vision to play this well must have a sixth sense. Once I started playing chess with a clock this quickly became apparent to me, lol.

(53,061 posts)Proud to have worked for the organisation that handled his resettlement from the camp although wonder about what happened with his sponsors stateside that they ended up in a homeless shelter even though the parents worked, was this the result of Trump cuts in support?
Glad he is here.
