Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumswhen the former guy dies, we MUST have his brain examined.
it could happen before that, when he has his day in court his lawyers would be remiss if they didnt bring up diminished capacity.
we need an answer to the question-is he nuts? does he have dementia? is he brain damaged from all the drugs?
mental capacity is a fraught topic but an important one.
we need to get into this century, and sharpen our laws because there are all kinds of brain conditions that impair judgement besides axis 1 mental illnesses.
we know he flunked 2 dementia screens and lord knows what else is in his medical records at reed.
if his upcoming trials focus on his mental capacity, and the truth about his health, instead of his criminal liability, i might be satisfied w that.
imho, it has been the elephant in the room for the last 5 yrs, and it is a conversation this country needs to have.

(70,090 posts)no idea how it would work tbh.
that's why i hope his lawyers are the ones to bring it up.
but i find it THE pressing question if we want to not do this again.
even if we just passed a law to codify that the public has the right to know about the president's health.
no more dr oz, and dr ronnie feelgood, who belongs in the brig.
and those that could have invoked 25a will be shown to be culpable for his crimes as well. another important precedent.

HOWEVER I do like the idea that the nominees for Presidential office must pass at least basic mental health screening tests and take some sort of psych evaluation before even being allowed to run for office.
WHY we haven't thought of this before is beyond me.
SHOULDN'T the person with their finger on the button that can launch the nukes be determined SANE BEFORE being put in that position of power?

Sure, laugh.

(5,125 posts)SCARY THOUGHT.... toward end of second *USH there were pushes for a drug to make people more susceptible to suggestion...
THERE IS ONE OUT THERE... called Devil Breath (aka-scopolamine)
https://www.thecabinchiangmai.com/blog/colombian-devil-breath-world-scariest-drug-kills-your-free-will/
IN ALL THESE MASS RALLIES... what if this drug were pumped out into the crowd?
WOULD it be possible to find it in the blood stream?
How long does Devil's Breath stay in your system?
It's also nearly impossible to detect, as it's only in your bloodstream for four hours. So by the time you emerge from your zombie state and go to a hospital, the remnants are gone.

(5,125 posts)But maybe like on the "Supernatural" series, if it gets sliced open, the black residue of the demon that possessed him will ooze out and we will have proof of stranger things.
Bust him open.
Probably more boring than that though. He bragged about never sleeping.
Lack of sleep over long periods of time definitely produce psychotic issues such as hallucinations, perceptual distortions, anxiety, irritability, depersonalization, and temporal disorientation.
And metamorphopsia - which I had never heard of before looking up sleep deprivation's affect on a person. I would say we have seen signs that his VISION is DISTORTED.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metamorphopsia
Metamorphopsia is a type of distorted vision in which a grid of straight lines appears wavy and parts of the grid may appear blank. People can first notice they suffer with the condition when looking at mini-blinds in their home.
The Amsler Grid showing the visual perception of the left eye of a person experiencing metamorphopsia (straight lines appear bent or curved)[1][2]
Initially characterized in the 1800s, metamorphopsia was described as one of the primary and most notable indications of myopic and senile maculopathies.[3] Metamorphopsia can present itself as unbalanced vision, resulting from small unintentional movements of the eye as it tries to stabilize the field of vision.[3] Metamorphopsia can also lead to the misrepresentation of an objects size or shape.[4]
It is mainly associated with macular degeneration, particularly age-related macular degeneration with choroidal neovascularization.[5] Other conditions that can present with complaints of metamorphopsia include: pathological myopia, presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome, choroidal rupture and multifocal choroiditis.[5]
Pathological myopia is an extremely high amount of nearsightedness that causes a major alteration of the shape or globe of the eye, which may lead to profound vision loss. In the United States, it occurs in about 2% of the population and is the seventh leading cause of legal blindness.

i do know we have made leaps and bounds there, tho.
Still think basic mental health screening BEFORE being allowed to run for political office could help avoid some of this crap going forward.

(57,080 posts)Dean is featured prominently in some versions of Abbott & Costello's Who's on First comedy sketch. In the sketch Abbott is explaining to Costello that many ballplayers have unusual nicknames including Dizzy Dean, his brother Daffy Dean and their "French cousin Goo-fay Dean". The fictitious French cousin's name is goofy pronounced with an exaggerated French accent.

(5,125 posts)I'm not looking for minute differences, we need variety in our leaders.
BUT SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT SLEEP CONSISTENTLY and ignores a pandemic under their nose and yells at their staff and fires anyone who disagrees with them is showing signs of extreme mental issues.
WAS he having a mental breakdown? Was he manic? Delusional? Maybe that happens on that job in limited measure even for a healthy person because of the stress. But do we put someone predisposed to major issues in that position?
Is the person a sociopath without the filters needed to make decisions in the best interest of others? THAT BAR I WOULD SEE SET.
No one who is incapable of taking the interests of "The People" into consideration should be made the highest leader in the land.

(5,125 posts)But losing your cool on a daily basis and firing people who are doing their job and following the rules is either illegally unethical or insane.
Encouraging people to expose themselves to a deadly illness is NOT a sane and rational response. Was it crazy or intentional cruelty? Is there truly a difference?
I just want to know for sure WHICH it was.
Don't you think it at all possible that someone who has been advised since Jan 2020 that he lost an election and has seen almost 100 lawsuits dismissed for lack of evidence MIGHT consider the facts if that person were sane and rational?
DELUSIONS are a sign of mental illness.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6048360/
Background: Going without sleep for long periods of time can produce a range of experiences, including perceptual distortions and hallucinations.
Conclusions: Psychotic symptoms develop with increasing time awake, from simple visual/somatosensory misperceptions to hallucinations and delusions, ending in a condition resembling acute psychosis. These experiences are likely to resolve after a period of sleep, although more information is required to identify factors which can contribute to the prevention of persistent symptoms.
NOW I personally know actual manic-depressives who I would trust to make logical decisions while on their meds, but who during a psychotic break do really stupid stuff. Dangerous to themselves and others kind of stuff.
Should a manic-depressive be banned from running for office? Probably not.
But should their mental health be constantly monitored in that case, yes. Just like all other pre-existing conditions. We want our President to be in their best physical/mental capacity so they can do this difficult job.
WHAT OTHER President has allowed over 1/5 a million people to die on his watch while fighting AGAINST solutions to the problem?
Maybe he isn't "insane" but just lazy and narcissistic.
https://www.courant.com/opinion/op-ed/hc-op-johnston-trump-coronavirus-history-0726-20200726-onppataft5exjmk7y4hdwschfa-story.html
Perhaps most tellingly, Trump has sidelined his most knowledgeable advisors. When he has disagreed with the infectious disease experts and epidemiologists who know best how to counter this invisible enemy, Trump quit listening to them. Instead, he has asked advice primarily from those whose main qualification is personal loyalty; they are not pressing him for an integrated federal response to COVID-19.
Imagine Roosevelt turning away from the advice of the militarys leading generals and admirals in the spring of 1942 and listening instead to the leading white supremacists of the day, such as the popular radio personality Father Charles Coughlin, who overtly expressed his Nazi sympathies, and the flyer Charles Lindbergh, who urged Congress to negotiate a neutrality pact with Hitlers Germany.
Imagine what might have happened if Roosevelt had gotten tired of all the effort it was taking to oppose Japans fascistic imperialism in Asia and Nazi and Fascist expansionism in Europe and simply signed a neutrality pact with Hitler, Hideki Tojo and Mussolini only a few months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. That is, essentially, how todays president of the United States has reacted to the deadly attack of COVID-19 on our country.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST:
Roosevelt will always be remembered by his words, There is nothing to fear but fear itself.
And Trump will always be remembered by his: I dont take responsibility at all.
EDIT NOTE: Added italics for my own comments to separate my ideas and opinions from factual support items listed

(70,090 posts)not considered when judging culpability, but should be considered an aggravating circumstance.
it doesnt necessarily mean leniency. it could be cause to throw away the key.
people taking certain meds can become manic. they do stupid shit mostly, but their families usually cant stop them from pissing away their money, for instance.
maybe it leads us to better understand human behavior, and advances the science and the debate.
we just know so much more than we did even a decade ago.
