U.K. churchgoers stunned as Bidens join them at Sunday service

Churchgoers in a seaside resort in England say they have been left “gobsmacked” when U.S. President Joe Biden and the first lady Jill Biden dropped in for a Sunday service.

The Bidens are in Cornwall, southwest England, where the U.S. president is attending a Group of Seven wealthy democracies summit.

On Sunday morning, ahead of the summit’s conclusion, they were seen attending mass at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Ives.

“I think gobsmacked is probably a very true word,” said Annie Fitzpatrick, 58. “It’s quite amazing, we went into the church and they took some details from us and I thought this is a bit unusual.

"About 10 minutes into the service the doors opened up and President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden walked in and just sat in the pew just across from me.”

We took a wrong turn and traveled up the Worthy Toll Road out of Porlock, a very historic and beautiful drive. Since that took longer than the main route, we didn't have a chance to take the side trip to Port Isaac.

Seriously, I wanted to stop for lunch at the place that was the location for Bert's restaurant. Oh, well - the Worthy Toll Road is a neat drive:

The last part, just as we were getting to the open fields, we were just inundated with pheasants (or maybe grouse). We ended up crawling along since they would fly out of the hedges as we came up to them and we didn't want to hit them.

You can see the main road, A39, that we were supposed to take, but we missed the turn. By the time we realized it, we were almost at the toll road gate so we decided to take it. It was well worth it.

While we may never make it back to the UK - we spent two and a half months in the fall of 2019 - we keep adding places to our list that we would like to go back to see. I'd like to go back to the Orkneys, maybe on to the Shetlands this time, and my husband liked Cornwall best of all. I'd love to go back to Skye since I was sick the day my husband had a tour of the island and so I missed most of it. And I'd love to take the train from Glasgow to Maillag, which is the Harry Potter train.

It's cool to see places on TV shows we've been to in person. I saw a Wycliffe episode set at Lizard with a pivotal scene at the Lifeboat station we got to look down at. And of course, from Doc Martin, Port Isaac looks so familiar.

You just know, after he corrected his stupid first mistake of holding the holy book upside down, flips it around to present the title of the book, written on the spine, as the name is not written on the front. (I checked other photos)

He has to make sure..for the cameras....that they know what book this is. Like a marketer making sure to present the brand. Totally forced and awkward pose, without any awareness that that is unnecessary to most folks more familiar with what a Bible looks like.

come forward for communion and hit the door. To be fair, my sister's husband would stop out in the entry and cross himself before bolting for the car.

We still tease him that he could never have survived the 3-4 hour church we had growing up. Basically, we'd go until the preacher got hungry, then we'd all eat either in the hall next to the chapel or outside.
