My air conditioner was leaking into the closet of my apartment and I'm talking to the man fixing it. I'm in L A and being a transplant I ask the man where he's from and he says he from Russia. I said wow, you don't have an accent and I volunteered that my maternal grandparents were from Byelorussia. He then said he also lived in the UK and Israel. That's when I volunteered there's a street named after one of my ancestors in Tel Aviv. I asked him if he liked it there and has he ever went back and he said "There's nothing to do. It's like Arizona with a castle." I said you know there are people willing to die for every inch of it.


I come from a mixed background but I can say the diaspora is something else.
