Beaumont, TX. elects first Black female mayor in runoff

On the same day the United States celebrated its first federally-sanctioned Juneteenth, the City of Beaumont elected its first Black female mayor.

Three-term former Ward IV Councilwoman Robin Mouton will be Beaumont’s next mayor and the only woman on the Beaumont City Council. She was elected with nearly 52% of the votes.

Robin, you are Black history,” someone shouted from the crowd as Mouton gave a speech after the final results were in.

The race was close with fewer than 4 percentage points separating Mouton and candidate Roy West. But as results trickled in Saturday night, Mouton led the whole time — from early returns to the final tally.

Mouton couldn’t be reached for comment to The Enterprise after results were in. But she addressed supporters at a victory party at the MCM Elegante Hotel shortly after results came in.

“I’m back my councilmen,” she said. “I have a new chair.”

I wish her luck because that poor city (and those nearby) was just devastated after TCs Harvey (2017), Imelda (2019), Laura, and Delta (both 2020).

Teams were led by over 200 wins by Willie Smith, a Black coach, father of huge football star Bubba Smith, [All-America, All-Pro, 6 police Police Academy films as 'Hightower', numerous Miller Lite easy open cans, etc.].
Beaumont produced a large number of good black players.
Not enough to win a black mayor until now.
