https://www.salon.com/2021/06/20/one-of-them-has-to-go-the-gop-or-america-as-we-know-it_partner/Corruption like this is not a joke; it's already cost Texas ratepayers $28 billion and 800 lives, and more is on the way. And the Texas Republican politicians' response is just to make it harder for Texans to vote.
In state after state, Americans are seeing how the GOP has transformed itself from a legitimate political party into an arm of giant corporations and the billionaires they have created, all while rigging the system to keep themselves in office.
In some states the GOP is mostly dancing with the fossil fuel industry that's destroying our climate and poisoning us; in others it's the health insurance or big drug industries they're helping to bankrupt and addict Americans, or the student or payday loan industries that are destroying the American Dream.
The gun industry is making billions while America experiences daily mass shootings that Republicans refuse to do anything about.
In their wake every year are over 30,000 gun deaths, 500,000 bankruptcies because somebody in the family got sick, young people who can't escape debt for decades if ever, and a landscape littered with destroyed lives and suicides.
None of these things are happening in any other developed nation. But no other developed nation has a major political party that has become a serial killer of its nation's people and governs like the Mafia. . . .

(10,832 posts)This is the choice: America as a democratic Republic or a criminal enterprise, a mafia state so beloved by Trump and his supporters.
The GOP is anti-democratic and unAmerican. They can scream and holler all they want.
The choice is clear, the warning is all around us.
There will be not be a second warning.

(2,949 posts)Their best interests may not be what we think they are/should be. Some want savior over financial well being. Or the right to own a gun. And perhaps something else i overlooked here. Most of these cannot be convinced to vote else wise by us mere peons. It would be a waste of time. There are still some who can be convinced to see the light but it takes time and gentle prodding.

(17,931 posts)seem to be the only viable options. They're convinced fetuses (feti?) and guns are more important than their children finding decent paying jobs. People who can't see past the extent of their beer money.

(10,495 posts)Those would be our campaign (bribe) system and Media propaganda. The Donor class are also the media advertising class. Republicans do their bidding on to stay in power.
No one focuses on these issues because none of the media really talk about it. They are the recipients of all of that campaign cash and ad money.

Of course, we want to keep our system of checks and balances and fair elections. That sort of goes without saying.
However, one party has run the country in direct opposition to the will and the interest of its people, while the other has lacked the will to meet them head on, fight them as hard as they've fought us. There is no way McConnell should have built a near dictatorship using Senate procedural quirks. First order of business should have been to defang that snake. Failing that, they should have used those same procedural quirks to hamstring Republicans.
The country is tilted so far toward the interests of the billionaires and the corporations they control that little is left for the rest of us. That is another thing that has to go. Yes, stepping on everybody in sight making that billion is probably fun for them, but there has to be a mechanism to force them to divest it before they croak,a sliding scale tax structure making sure their children don't walk off with all of it. Benefits, wages and taxes need to be indexed to inflation. and no more downscale substitutions like Greenspan did. The rich won't pay a day's wage for a day's work unless they are forced to and it's time to force them to. This laissez-faire, "free market" crap has got to be discarded, even Adam Smith had to resort to fairies and regulation to make his system work, at all. Junk it, it's not worth keeping. Taxes need to be progressive.
The system of floating a wartime economy on small wars fought somewhere far away has to be junked along with it.
The system of excluding people from opportunity because of what they look like, who they're attracted to, or where they are born has got to go.
Interfering in other countries because rich colonialists are squawking over having an occasional socialist elected needs to end forever.
Churches that try to insert their dogma into civil law need to be taxed. Period.
America as it is needs a hell of a lot of work and keeping it the way it is because change is uncomfortable is for conservatives, small "c." Our basic framework is worth conserving. What the parasitic rich have done to us is not.
