(94,595 posts)Some people (here) think that's equally barbaric. If a convicted murderer is physically healthy, do they deserve anything more than that?

(99,710 posts)Amnesty International has called for an end to prolonged solitary confinement. Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the worst of the worst seems like enough.

(99,710 posts)If a lifer breaks the rules while in the general population then solitary confinement is an appropriate escalation in punishment.

We do it because some lawmakers are convinced it will lower the crime rate through deterring or what-have-you. It has a supernatural effect according to our society.
Its also filled with rituals; death row, the last meal, the chamber, filling out the final appeals, etc.

I'd be fine with capital punishment if it was the inevitable consequence of it having been imposed in error.
Judge, prosecutor, DA.......there should be consequences.
People have been executed in error.

(50,955 posts)execute a prisoner than it does to incarcerate someone for life.
Someone like Ted Bundy, for example, who people will point to as a perfect example of why they want the death penalty? My answer is that I wouldn't want to pay more than necessary to keep him from killing more women. Jailing him for life would have been much cheaper.

(25,862 posts)Don't they have a holy book that has some kind of rule about not killing? I think they call it a Commandment? I have never seen that rule printed out with a lot of footnotes or fine print explaining when it is okay to kill. I wonder why?

(14,858 posts)and then, according to the same book, God proceeds to command that the death penalty be imposed for all sorts of transgressions.

(99,710 posts)I think I influenced her politics as much as she influenced mine. Anyway a Phil Donahue show on the death penalty was on and the people in the waiting room could tell by my facial expressions I clearly opposed it. Somebody said something when I left the room and my mom said if that's the way he feels that's the way he feels. I am extremely uncomfortable in the taking of life in any instance with the emphasis on any.

(2,955 posts)And IMO the death penalty is given out far too often, and too delayed. It should only be given for the really extreme crimes where there's very strong proof of guilt, and then carried out quickly. IE, I wouldn't give the death penalty for simple murders/robberies gone bad/etc. Stuff like murdering children, serial killers, really disturbing murders, etc...Fry em.

And for all these states who want to give people another option because they cant do lethal injection, if its all about having the execution they might as well have stoning, the guillotine and being eaten by lions as options.
Death penalty should just go away.
