The McCormack-Dickstein Committee (forerunner of the HUAC) looked into the Bankers' Plot/Businessmen's Plot and concluded that it was very concerning but never really got beyond the discussion phase. One measure of how capable the conspiracy was is the fact that approached Smedley ("I Was a Gangster for Wall Street'') Butler to be their Yankee Doodle Mussolini.
Have you ever seen the movie "Gabriel Over the White House" from 1933? If you're a fan of what-ifs, that one is a doozy.
