In the grand scheme of things this event is absolutely minor, but I just wanted to share my joy and relief. I accepted my current position over a year ago, with the understanding that it was a permanent work from home arrangement, only to have the company go back on the deal and tell me I had to be in the office three days a week starting in September. Getting to the office via transit would cost $350 a month, to say nothing of the time spent going back and forth. I had a conversation with my department director to try to come to a compromise, and his response was, "Wow, sucks to be you. See you in the office, or else."
I applied for a management position that's full-time work from home, and found out today I got the job! I was stressing so hard about how to make this work, and now I'm getting a 10% raise and still get to work from home! The benefits package is even better than what I have now, to boot!
ETA: Thank you to all those who offered congratulations and wished me good luck! Your kindness is very much appreciated, and it's why DU is such a fantastic place!

(149,585 posts)What a relief for you, after that awful ultimatum from your now former boss!
One thing puzzled me: Is this new job with a different company, or with your old one?
Anyway, congrats!

(3,185 posts)When I told the recruiter why I wanted to leave my current position, her response was, "Wow, their loss." After I got the news, I took the day off to relax and celebrate!

(64,995 posts)I have a friend who has been a year on the job & wants out.
Not his style to bail. I knew him from work, and he was there 16 years until he changed to a slightly lower paying job to move to Florida, to care care of his widowed mom. (He was there 14 years when I retired, 3 years ago.). He was 9 years on his previous job.
That company described the job as something wildly different, and he finds that any corrective action requests are a paper exercise. Nobody ever works on making problems go away. But, they told him they wanted him because he had experience in that work.
He's looking for something else, even if the pay is further reduced. He's single & has a pretty healthy 401k at 49, so he can manage with a cut.

(3,185 posts)And wow, it sounds like your friend really got a raw deal. Few things are more frustrating than pointing out a problem and proposing a solution, only for management to ignore you and bumble along making the same mistakes. I'm glad he's able to make ends meet and take care of his mom, though.

(64,995 posts)She recovered from a kidney transplant even better than hoped.
She's back living in her own house. But, should something come up, he's no longer 900 miles away.
He worked for one of the manufacturing sites and did that kind of work.
From my corporate (an outsider) view, he was good at getting corrective/preventive actions to stick. But, this new joint is going through the motions so they conform to the ISO standards. That's about the extent of their interest.
Good luck on your new gig!

(3,185 posts)But my parents taught me that it's never wise to burn bridges unnecessarily, so I'm going to give two weeks' notice and make sure that whoever's replacing me is properly trained. It's the decent thing to do, even if they didn't treat me very decently.

(3,056 posts)Congratulations on the new job. Your (soon to be) ex-boss is a perfect example of why people are leaving their jobs in droves right now. What's really pathetic is they STILL can't figure out why people are tired of being exploited and treated like crap.

(68,552 posts)made them come into work when for accountants it was not necessary...and some got sick with Covid. Their benefits were so bad that one employee actually died on the job as getting permission to see doctors was difficult. My daughter got a big raise and will receive a good-sized bonus and so did her boss...who when she asked about the current companies offer of management if she stayed told her they promised him a great new job only to hire outside the firm...he said, 'take the job and don't even hesitate.'

(3,185 posts)It's my first foray into being a manager, so there's a little bit of anxiety mixed in with the excitement. I've always been a worker bee. But I've had my share of terrible bosses and great bosses. I'm going to treat my team with decency, kindness, and respect. A manager's job is to make his or her team's job easier and better, and that's the mindset I'm going in with.

(9,580 posts)don't ever let someone get a pass because you feel sorry for them. Your staff will notice, and resent you for it. Managing is hard, much harder than people think, but it sounds like you've got what it takes! Best to you! Forward!

(111,245 posts)rather than go back to long office hours bracketed by long commutes at either end, thanks for proving my point.
Corporations who want to maintain their office fiefdoms are going to have to start hustling for green kids right out of school, getting what they're willing to pay for. Those kids will get that job experience and then they, too, will choose "or else."
I never minded long subway commutes in Boston, I read loads of books and knit a lot of sweaters, it was both productive and relaxing time for me. Here in NM, I've lived in dodgy neighborhoods to be within 15 minutes of work. That was good, too.
That work contract that had people commuting a couple of hours to an exurb so they could afford a free standing house with a yard for the rug rats is going to start breaking down. It was an inhumane way to try to live. I'm delighted to see people rebelling against it.

(11,451 posts)To get back to office and she has toddler and no daycare. So she went found another job permanent at home for more money.
Quit her job and they begged her to stay offered her the same, so she took it. She liked her work and bosses just wanted to work at home.
Nice to see employees finally getting some power.

(3,185 posts)She just came back from maternity leave to find out that she now has to go to the office three days a week, and she lives waaaaaaaaaaaay further away than I do. Her commute by car is about 2.5 hours one way, and of course she has an infant at home to care for. But as far as I know, they refused to make any exceptions for anyone, no matter the circumstances.
I'm glad your stepdaughter was able to work something out with her employer. I wish mine had been as accommodating...

(63,903 posts)told other members of the staff that I would be retiring in early December (I would receive and extra amount of money on SS by waiting that long). At the time the new CEO was getting rid of all the staff over the age of 60, as she considered them "dead wood." Had I not informed my co-workers of my last day of work I would have been somehow gotten rid of (I don't know what she had up her sleeve but she was determined to do it). Months after I had left I heard that the Board of Directors had fired her. I felt vindicated.

(59 posts)They lost a good employee because they were just being assholes. It's not like you were asking for a gold-plated toilet. Working from home is awesome for so many reasons, but one that a lot of people don't think of is the cost of commuting. It can make a big difference.
