(1,328 posts)Im seeing the crisis in voting rights. Its really dire. One element we should be paying attention to is the overt violence being directed at poll workers. Too many are being intimidated into quitting. Leaving, I suppose, the work to their extremest cronies. The thuggery is coming into the open. Its scary.

retired people who believe in honest elections, and work hard at it. Its a volunteer position with a stipend, and theyre not in it for the big bucks.
Three of my retired lady friends used to work the polls. One was very explicit about why she was quitting though: it was Trumps thugs. They started walking right in and hanging around, doing things like standing behind my friend and looking at the precinct register that voters signed. Shes not a timorous person and never has been, but these men were threatening and they spooked her.

(10,435 posts)I think the point was that poll workers, such as the friend you describe, would be intimidated and quit. Leaving the work (poll watching) to the extremist cronies who go along with the thugs like the ones who do the intimidating.
It's their goal.

(1,328 posts)If poll workers like your friends are intimidated away from those jobs, who is likely to take their place? Friends of the thugs seems likely
A couple of bad acting poll workers could slow down voting and make it such a hassle that some people will give up and not vote. Its a great way to screw up the vote. Another, more extreme tactic in the war on voting.

(63,221 posts)It is at a crisis point, you are exactly right. Are there only a handful of us who believe that our democracy could be over in a little more than a year from now if we don't do something drastic to curb this behavior?
The rule of law has become a joke in this country and there is little to no accountabilty for right wing criminals. We can't keep waiting for some deus ex machina to save us here. I don't care if we have to become as bad as they are but we have to stop them. Too much is at stake here.

(8,929 posts)life of me I can't understand how Donald Trump is still walking free after inciting a riot in our Capitol, attacking our police, leaving people dead and murdered. And he is allowed to walk away as if nothing happened.

(15,650 posts)option they have left to survive politically and possibly financially: a coup; the destruction of a free, fair and equitable democracy. They went too far. They know it and they know they have no other option left to secure their survival but by brute force power grab.

The MAGAt masses are ignorant fools, but their puppet masters are not.

(63,221 posts)But I wouldn't call the puppet masters intellectuals. They are still very short sighted and motivated mainly by greed and a will to power. They completely lack wisdom.
ShazzieB
(16,529 posts)They're crafty and cunning, wily and calculating, but they lack insight, and, as you say, wisdom. Put that together with the fact that they also have no empathy or compassion for others, and the results are not pretty.
